A Fatty - How's she looking?

I got my mare at the begging of Autumn and she was rather fat to say the least. The pictures don't really show quite how fat she was but I did start to panic about possibly having bought a bogof :o :eek: Thankfully no foalie appeared and she has slowly lost a bit of weight.

ETA - She's a 5 YO ISH!

Within the first month or so -

So how do you think she's looking?

She's not been in a huge amount of work due to various problems (physical and behavioural) so I limited her hay and she just gets a small 'token' feed at night. Since Christmas I have increased her hay a bit but I am still trying to get the balance right so she doesn't pile the pounds back on. Hopefully once she's in consistent work it will be much easier!

I think she looks good, very nice horse, but to be honest I would definitely not want her any less covered than that.
 
Still a rather cresty neck though the rest is vastly improved - well done!

Magnesium can help break down fatty deposits - might be worth hi dose mag ox (get from natural horse supplies :) )

Id want a little more off now so that come spring when the grass comes you've got wiggle room before you hit the red zone of obesity and laminitis....!
 
What a nice horse. But I have seen worse fatties, not that bad for a fatty(she looks fine by the way..bit more muscle has start of it).
Looks about right just keep working. Agree no other treats needed. Nice to see sunshine in the pics too! Forgot what thats like. Roll on the summer..........

What do you want to do with her?

Yes muscle is a work in progress, unfortunately due to saddle, behavioural and physical problems it's been very stop start with her so far :(

I don't know, there's no details about how she's bred on her passport :( I just know she came from Ireland last Spring!

That diet isn't quite as strict now but she is still being rationed instead of getting ad-lib. Hopefully by the summer we will be doing lots of stuff together so it will be easier to keep her weight down!

I don't think the photos show just how fat she was but ditto, I have seen worse! Can't believe what a scruff she has become since the summer photos, don't remember her whites being so white :eek: :D

I hope to do a bit of everything with her, hunting, SJ, dressage, HT's etc. I've done very, very little competing so I bought her with the hope of working our way up together. I just want to have fun but if we find something we're good at along the way then all the better!
 
I think she looks lovely right now. I disagree with those who say she needs to lose more. I wouldn't like to see her any leaner. I think you have her spot on.
 
She's a similar stamp to my fella (also an "out of Ireland, by Boat" breeding ;)) and he also tends to podge up on very little grazing. Provided it comes off by Spring, I'm always happy :)

Can I just ask, has she a bit of thrush or contracted heels? The way she's standing under at the back (and indeed a bit at the front too) suggests to me she's trying to get weight off something uncomfortable in her feet :) The weather has been so horrible this year, ours all have slightly soggy feet, but that stance is always a warning sign for me to bust out the thrush treatments ;)

I haven't noticed any thrush but will have a good poke and sniff tonight to be on the safe side :)
 
She's looking much better!

I agree with those who say she could afford to lose a little more - particularly this side of spring - she looks like she'd do well on the grass and I'd always prefer to err on the side of caution - it's often much easier to put it on than it is to get it off!

But otherwise, she looks great :)
