Cuties! ?

i was wondering about getting one...do all bigger horses allow them into their herd? Do they integrate well generally?

Mine lives with four others ranging from 11.2hh to 16hh. He gets away with murder. They allow him to eat out of their feed bowls with them and pretty much do what he likes. He’s quite laid back but very cheeky and will always get out of trouble. For a Shetland he’s also exceptionally good with fencing so I feel very lucky.

(Photo taken when I bought him a rug which I think he’s only worn twice, his coat is incredible).

The shetlands are the bosses of the herd 9/10. The horses do the same as humans - aw it's ickle and cute, it can do what it wants - then boom! It's the boss!

Gray isn't allowed Shetlands to play with ss he quite litterally picks them up and drags them around!

I lost my old boy at 30 last year. I still have my 29yo stallion along with a bunch of younger mares and the colt foal/yearling now.

My stallion in December:

OMG they are all so lovely. I am really keen to get a couple but it's not really practical as I want to retire and land in Surrey is so expensive and I'm too old to deal with yard politics or having to rent then move if things don't work out. They are so much fun. We had one on loan and there were a few at the yard when my daughter was very young. Later one of her TBs literally leaned over the fence and picked one up by the rug - he had not seen one before and was just curious!

I am so tempted to get one, the neighbour has them and they are so cute .. and naughty! But people get them for companions to horses and i dont see how they manage it as they are so incompatible with grazing requirements.

Thoughts on this would be great ... clearly i want one so blag it if oyu have to, lol!

Little biscuit was a good companion to my horse and they used to share grazing, I muzzled him when needed however I had to literally plait the muzzle into his mane or he would get it off! In recent years he is older and has Cushings so he now has a separate small paddock in my horses field so still a companion but not as good as if they could actually be together sadly x
I agree with the other poster minis rule the roost and will boss bigger horses about ! Well mine always has ?

The more you "manage" them the worse they are. You will rarely see a Shetland stud with any with lammi even though they live out in big fields, in groups and basically fend for themselves all year round. They get fat in summer, strip down nicely in winter as they are supposed to.

You start bringing them in, muzzling them etc. They gorge as soon as they see a blade of grass and use any bit of sugar to store for another day just in case.

I was wondering if a stallion shetland would work...with a mare and gelding horse pair...or is it always a big NO to have any size stallion with a mare? Surely they couldnt mate...but behaviourally could be problematic with 2 hot/warm blood horses anyway!

Your shetland foal thread got me wanting one too!

I’ve seen some locally for sale...theyre smaller than my GSD! She’d love playing with a shetland! some miniature shetlands are small enough to snuggle with the dogs in their beds in the house! LOL

I showed OH some...he nervously agreed ‘yeah, theyre cute’ looking at me worryingly! No more horses doesnt include Shetlands does it?!

Where there is a willy there is a way! I know of a Shetland x Fresian - the mare lay down for the shetland to hop on!

No, shitlands are not included in the 'no more horses' rule so you are absolutely good to go :)

?? That will please OH!! He wakes up one morning and sees a stampeding herd of shitlands outside the window!

knowing him he’ll say 4 shitlands = 1 horse!!

There’s a uk lady on youtube who has a mini herd which she takes on camping trips, along with her dog and cat, theyre all soooo adorable.
