Morning :)

Thought I'd write an update on my mare who came out of racing 8 months ago. Don't know if you remember but I was lied to by the dealer and found out after 5 months of ownership that my horse hadn't been re trained or let down after racing (had gone to the knackers yard!).

I paniked and had her 5* vetted, which she passed, stopped competing her and went back to basics with her flatwork. Before I found out about her history I'd been treating her as a green horse but pushing her and she'd started to loose confidence out competing as a result.

So, she's been for a holiday at a friend's house where she lived out, did lots of hacking and learnt flatwork basics :) Here are some photos:

She's back at my house now and I'm going to continue to take things slowly with her. We're going to do lots of flatwork, lots of hacking and a bit of jumping. I'm also going to hunt her over the winter :) So hopefully by next Spring she'll be ready to start competing again.

Thanks for reading :)

I don't remember the first installment - god what a nightmare ! But it looks like she's coming so well. Did you ever get anything out of the dealer ? sm x

Good luck to you over the winter. Our guy is a little moved on from that but just like you we're back to basics before we start going airborne again.

Lovely looking girl you have. Hope everything works out ok. It is a nightmare when everyone lies to you to sell a horse. To be honest it would be better to go straight to the yard these days and cut out the crooked, bent, thieving, lieing, hustling middle man.

Thank you for everyone's replies :)

Nope, never got anything out of the dealer.

The first instalment, in brief, was;

Went to view a private horse in Kent but it turned out to be a total nutcase, so looked at the dealer's horses. Tryed Jas, fell in love and asked for details. She was advertised as a PC allrounder ISH sports horse. She has a Whetherbys passport so I confronted the dealer about this and she appolagised and agreed that Jas is a TB, not a sports horse. I checked everything else and it all seemed true, so had a second viewing and put down a deposit.

It was obvious that Jas wasn't an experienced PC horse as she was very green to ride and handle, but I didn't mind a project. She was in poor condition so spent our first 2 months together feeding her and taking her for little walks inhand. We then started with her fitness programme and then got her jumping. We did a few low key comps which she did really well in, so moved up to bigger classes, which is when it all went wrong!

I decided to research her history in more depth and found out the following:
- She raced as a 7 & 8 yr old in Ireland
- She raced 7 times but was too slow
- She was sent to knackers yard
- Was picked up cheaply from knackers yard and bought over to England
- Stabled (with another horse in same stable) for a month and only fed 1/2 scoop HappyHoof per day :(
- She had an incorrectly fitted saddle and a very sore back
- Then we bought her :)

Pic of her first week with us (I stopped riding her after this):

OMG poor girl. That's some picture. Looks like all she needed is some "me" time to herself and a good, balanced diet. Oh and a physio for the back? and a saddle fitter? never ends does it? :)

Always good to do your research. It always pulls up things you really have to be aware of. We ended up tracing where Sleepy was by using his vacc records, google maps and yell.com. We then found out the last owner had been sold him as a companion horse cos he'd torn his shoulder. Not to be tacked up, let alone kicked into canter with a 17 stone woman on him.

She looks like a completely different horse now. Hats off to you for the job you've done so far.
