a quick update about my darling sweet Raff

Sorry it is not better news for you both.

Fingers crossed it is not too long before he can start to weight bear on it slightly and that his other leg stands up to it ok. At least he sounds like a calm chap.

Some tips from when I had to do the 12 weeks of cross tying - use haylage nets with the small holes so it lasts longer and put carrots through them so there is something to work for. I used to make up several haynets and get people to put them in at random times through the day for him I also used to leave carrots outside and asked people to give him a carrot when they passed - ok so not great for a biter but my horse wasn't! I also used to leave a radio on (and changed the station each day so he alternated between radio 2 and classic FM!)

So sorry to hear your news. Hope it goes well. My friends horse had a line fracture of the cannon a couple of years ago and won her first event (AI) this year. Insurance companies are swines!
Good luck

Rotten news for you so sorry - but - there is obviously some hope so don't give up just yet. If only the time did not drag so much when you are just waiting and hoping. (((get well vibes))) for Raff and (((hugs))) for you and a good kicking to your lousey insurance company. Keep us updated.

I am really sorry to hear that. hang on in there. huge vibes for Raff. atleast his temperament is on his side and he should stay calm.
hugs hun

Oh no I am so sorry. Having been through a similar hell with Sidney I know exactly what you are going through. He too was kicked and fractured his leg just above the knee joint.
I second ideas of the radio, carrots, swede and mirrors. Also it might be worth talking to the vet about additional protection for the leg he is now load bearing on - pads etc. Plus having sedalin or acp on standby so if he does get upset over anything you can deal with it.
Fingers crossed he stays chilled out for you - thats such a positive that he is like that. Sid spent 4 months doped out of his trolley to be able to get anywhere near him.
I know it doesn't feel like it at the moment but it does come to an end eventually. I know months sounds horrific but you do get through it I promise. If you want to chat PM me - i know exactly what its like and i have absolutely everything crossed for you and your obviously much loved boy xxxx

Oh crikey! So sorry to hear this and you were only just getting to enjoy riding him again, werent you??! He sounds like a poppet so this will make the box rest more bearable for you both. Do you still have him at home with your little shettie or is he at a yard now? Not sure if that is how he came to get kicked as cant imagine Iggle doing much damage??

Looking on all the positives, if he is at home think of all the time you can spend with him (you are going to have one hellave of a bond after this!) and if he is on a yard there would be lots to keep him interested there.

Sending you all the healing vibes I can and sendign insurance company lots of nasty vibes!

hang in there- at least he has a chance- with his temprament on his sde. i am so sorry for you and Raff:( *healing vibes* i hope he gets better soon hun xx

Fingers x'd for you he will be ok. I thought insurance companies actually had to cover you after the renewal date, assuming you had actually sent the paperwork? maybe someone will correct me, but I thougt you had a 30 day leeway? Due to the fact a new company- if you were transferring won't cover you for the first 14 days or so?
My boy had 3 months box rest after colic op, as a yearling, and coped fine.Ob cross tying is harder, but I also think what Happy Horse said is a brill idea which should make his days pass a little quicker for him, bless him.
Good luck.

Huge hugs to both of you. All you can do now is take each day as it comes.

Re the insurance, it may be worth having a word with your local Citizen's Advice Bureau or the Insurance Ombudsman to see if they can actually do that!

So sorry to hear that it's not better news. All crossed that he makes a good recovery, at least there are positive stories on here.
I can't believe the Insurance company! Well actually I can, of course, but I'm sure that it will be worth following that up.
As for BT, we decided eventually to kick them into touch. As BT are the only possible line providers here, we now use mobile phones and dongles. We have very few, if any, problems with this system.

You will be amazed how horses can recover from these things. My TB at 25 fractured her fetlock joint and even at that old age came sound and went on still to hunt and jump again.

If you have a laid back type then box rest is not that bad. I made sure my mare was visited five times a day to be skipped and given a tiny feed of non heating fibre. She had ad lib hay and spent most of her time nibbling and sleeping. I spent ages in the evening grooming her and she was very happy.

I would question the insurance, I am assuming you arranged it over the phone and they agreed cover - had you paid on a card and it just the paperwork back they are saying they have not received?

Send you a huge hug and big get well wishes for him.

Huge vibes to you both for a quick recovery. At least his temperament is on your side - I dread being told my mare needs any sort of box rest as she can barely handle being shut in a stable overnight.

Please keep us updated.

Can't say any more than what has already been said, but it really is truely obvious how much you adore your lovely horsey and with that in mind we all know that you will get through this. Raff is a cool horse and he will know what he has to do to help his leg too. Keep smiling, lots of hugs (((()))).

Thanks for updating us. Sorry the news isn't what you wanted to hear. Stay strong and have a <hug>. Healing vibes to Raff.

Hope it all works out for you and Raff. Got my fingers, toes, legs, arms crossed and just told the dogs to do the same.

If I win the lottery this week I will send you a PM and arrange for a nice deposit to arrive in your bank account..... or I am willing to delay my lottery win for a week or two for you to win!

Fingers, hooves and paws still firmly crossed for Raff.:)

My girl did 5 months on box rest when she had laminitis - it seemed to take forever at the time but no time at all when she was better and ready to go out. Some of the things I did for her to keep her occupied - bearing in mind she had lami so treats were restricted - a salt lick (one of the rock ones) and then when everything starts growing I would cut nettles and let them wilt, pull up cleavers and cow parsley and horse chestnut leaves and let her have a mix of them in her stable to munch alongside her soaked hay and chaff with lami supplements. The best thing was it gave her something green to nibble each day, it was all stuff that would help her and it was all stuff she actively seeks out to eat from the hedgerows. Would also buy the mint in the supermarkets when going cheap (and when mine had all been eaten from the garden!) to add to her dinner!!:)

Obviously was hoping for better news for you. Fear not, you can do it. Hang in there and remember we're all here for you xxxxxxxxxxx

So sorry to read this, its so obvious from your posts how much you think of Raff.

Will keep everything crossed for you and your boy, its amazing what they can come through.

Hugs and vibes to both of you x

hey all

again, thank you all for your sweet messages and kind words. it makes such a difference to me. really it does.

another quick update whilst i'm on my friend's computer...

so, Raff is still cross tied (obviously). he's now got the world's most enormous bandage on his broken leg (although it doesn't actually cover much of the break as the break is so high, but apparently it's supportive so will encourage a bit of weight bearing). his other leg is bandaged to try and help prevent lami. he's on VERY soaked hay, no treats :( , laminaze (sp?), and antibiotics.

not sure if this pic will work as it's FB but here goes:

i'm feeling a bit better, i've been a jibbering wreck. not sleeping etc. but, today the insurance company have agreed to send me a claim form. so PHEW! cos i was SO worried about not being able to afford to fix him.

he's totally chilled and happy in himself. the only thing that's upset him is having his legs bandaged. cos he's not a fan of bandages, let alone GIANT ones... :)

we've gotta love my darling Raff.

:D

keep those fingers crossed for him xxx
