I have watched quite a few of their vidoe's and they canter on hard stony tracks and roads, seem to take great pleasure at making a pony rear and are constantly waving plastic bags at them to get them to jump big fences.
Yes they are pretty good riders and yes the ponies look well cared for but that's not really the point.
At horse sales near me plastic bags on sticks have been banned as they terrified the ponies so much

the plastic bags on whips didn't annoy me so much as making the 30 year old pony canter on hard roads at end of thier 'mad hack' and they do say its slippy so thats even worse conditions to be doin that on! watch the videos that the girl has posted!
i did alot of mad things on my ponies when i was younger but always thought of the risks to the animal more so than anything!!
My daughter's pony is nearing that age himself and is full of life and when half fit more than capable of 'mad hacks' (she jumpes ditches on him, takes him through brambles, hedges etc). Hunts canter on tarmac roads at times, bet you wouldnt go and call your hunt master a 'muppet'.
Just because something isnt what you'd do doesnt mean it's wrong or irrisponsible. Again, IMO just another excuse for people to have a pop at teenagers....
Agh... is there anyone who doesn't think they are good riders at all?!
Its nice to have fun when you are a kid but from all the videos, it looks like all the ever do is act like prats with gag bits and plastic bags on sticks.... in every video they are hanging off their ponies mouths/kicking them in the kidneys or being bucked off/reared with, its really not pleasant to watch.
I'm sorry - I really don't see what all the hoo-ha is about! They are being kids... bombing about on ponies - riding and jumping bareback with no reins - it's like footage from the 60s/70s! Fantastic!
Re: the bag on a whip - I've been known to do this on a horse that we were trying to sharpen up - getting the horse to move away from the sound of the whip as opposed to the feel of it (or nagging with the leg) Perhaps their ponies don't actually need that - they may be copying someone they have seen doing it? I can't tell you how many riders we tried to copy as kids!
Seriously I'm baffled by some of the comments on here!
I really can't see much harm in what they are doing. Yeah, they caught their ponies in the mouth a couple of times but clearly wasn't on purpose and they always gave their ponies lots of fuss and pats afterwards. They are doing exactly what kids on ponies should do, lots of galloping about bareback, jumping jumps, nearly falling off... they make some ill advised decisions at times but nothing I would call a welfare issue.
I can't see why a plastic bag on the end of a whip is causing such a fuss when clearly the ponies are far from bothered by it. When the girl misjudged that jump the bag was right in the pony's eyeline and she still pulled him up easily despite hanging out the side door - if he had been at all nervous of the bag he would had been off like a rocket after the fence sending her flying. Just because it is a bit unusual, doesn't mean it is wrong unless it is causing the animal distress.
the ponies are kind, sensible looking types who obvioulsy know how to look after themselves. Good luck to all of them.
I opened this post rather hesitantly in case someone had videoed me and sent it in!
I have a New Forest pony I am presently backing. My first few experiences of lunging were terrible. She would just ignore the lunge whip and lay down on the floor and refuse to get up. I managed to stop her laying down by rather offensive methods, ie. as she started to lay down I would use the lunge whip around her legs and run after her growing. Once up, she proceeded to walk incredibly slowly around. Nothing I could do would gee her up. She would also just stumble over a small fence, or half jump it and stop mid way over. I tried jumping her in the hope she mind enjoy it.
The pony in question looks lovely in the field playing around and trying to get my friends older horse to play by biting his fetlocks. It's certainly not a physical problem.
Anyway, in desperation I tied a bag to the end of a whip and have not looked back. Pony now walks, trots and jumps small obstacles beautifully to voice aids. A bag on a pole is a lot kinder than trying to get her moving with a lunge whip which she either ignores or doesn't understand.
