Am I being unjustly cross about this? As some might know my health is not great now and probably on a limited time line. I have always had dogs and often rescued privately not through any specific organisation. My older son who lives at home now looks after the exercising and grooming side care of my two labs as unfortunately I am not hugely mobile for various reasons.

We, as in my son, my husband and myself, have discussed how much we miss having a little terrier around and thought it might be a feasible and nice idea, given my limitations, to perhaps look into foster or rehoming an older terrier that has health issues and is now at the end of its life. I know these older mutts are often very difficult to find homes for and sadly often end their already very difficult end of life time in rescue kennels. My son is quite prepared that if I happen to pop off while little dog is still with us he will continue with its day to day care, and ensuring it receives all appropriate vet care etc.

So based on this, and much cheered at the thought of still being able to help a little dog that is old and in dire straights I have been closely watching all rescue appeals here in Ireland for a suitable little buddy. So one came up a week or two back, getting on, a few health issues but nothing we wouldn't be able to manage. Doesn't need very much exercise due to health so is happy just ambling around the garden, loves a lap to snuggle on and good with other dogs. Perfect I thought, we have a very large fenced garden, I would really love a lap dog to keep me company on less mobile days and strolling around the garden with little mutt would be lovely for him and me. My son can still have his long cross country hikes with the two labs.

So he is still available 2 weeks later I messaged their ad on FB, just asking for more detail of the health issues, exact age and if two middle aged lazy labradors would be suitable company for him and any information they thought would help me decide if I wanted to formally apply to adopt and if our home would be suitable from our point of view. I expected a brief reply answering my questions, and also to be told they would obviously need to vet our home if I made a formal application. What did I get back? Just the usual automatic generated blurb, i.e " this is not monitored (why advertise dogs looking for homes then on that platform). You will need to fill in an adoption form to help us find a suitable dog for you." I do not want to fill in any application form at this stage as complete waste of their time and mine if the questions I need answers to are not forthcoming before application. I also do not want them to choose a dog for me, why would I? I have decades of experience with various breeds, I know my own circumstances and what age/type/needs of dog we could offer a very good old age home to. Of course I would fully accept that after application they would also need to check me and my home out and make their decision if they think the dog I want would be happy and safe with us.

I have replied that I cannot waste their time and mine and commit to a formal application without the details I have asked for. They have seen both messages but no response.

Tea and choccy bics for reading, am I being unreasonable do you think? I really despair of some rescues to be honest, they almost seem to put obstacles up to stop rehoming rather than do their best to accommodate would be new owners especially with their harder to rehome mutts.

Please be gentle folks, feeling decidedly low and frustrated at poor health implications today! 😟

I don't think you are being unreasonable requesting further information before committing. I definitely think some rescues make it too complicated; I expect they think that they are going to weed out unsuitable people, but they are doing the opposite as wanting more information is a responsible approach. It sounds as though you know exactly what sort of dog would be suitable for your home, and are aware of what you can offer them, so I really hope that you are successful soon.

I think all rescues have a forum to be filled then they call you to discuss further.
At least the ones in ireland I applied to.
I think it’s just so they have you in the system so if they don’t have something suitable right then they can keep in touch with you.

Something like the Cinnamon Trust is a great idea @Spotherisk.

Mrs J would you consider putting the word out locally in case there is a dog up for rehoming privately? The local vets might know of one, or may have a noticeboard that you could pop a card on. From posts I've read on AAD over the years it seems that breed-specific rescues are often more realistic about rehoming- is there a terrier breed rescue anywhere near you?

Yes it would be great if we had Cinnamon Trust here but not to my knowledge or anything similar either. They tend to just end up in various rescues over here when their owners die or go into nursing homes. Or of course they could be PTS by family members.😢

What really galls me about this particular rescue, when I was very active fund raising for horse and dog rescues here in Ireland I donated quite a good sum twice to these people. They would not have recognised me by my name I don't think, rather than the fundraising title I used, but even so.

OK, wondering about looking at the free ads. So very sadly here in England there are older dogs, often JRs, that are needing new homes. I get very sad for them as some I have seen are 10, but the family do not want to keep after a relative has gone.

I understand what you are trying to do, but most rescues around me want forms filled out. I think it's because this weeds out the time wasters. Unfortunately it also weeds out the likes of you who just want a quick chat about the dog before applying.

Does the Oldies Club operate in Ireland? They promote older dogs in all rescues across the UK, don't know if that includes Ireland too.

I haven't heard of them but I shall go and see what I can find thank you.

I hadn't even thought of free ads, excellent idea I shall also look into that - thank you.

Have you tried Molly Moos Westie Rescue? Despite the name they have all manner of small dogs and their posts typically say dm them on FB to ask about the dog. Not that I'm actively looking 😂 My old physio got her westie there

Eta I think they're based in Limerick and my physio in Belfast so pretty sure they rehome all over Ireland.

The link doesn't work skinnydipper, I am already trawling FB daily but you may have come across something I have missed?

That's a shame, despite the Chinese characters the link opens on my PC.

It is a private group with over 24K members, I'm not a member.

The name of the group is 'Dogs & cats for rehoming & adoption in Ireland'.

I have my eye on this little chap from them ArklePig but I think he is probably still a bit young and would need more exercise than I could give him, I don't think I can saddle my son with a third dog to walk long term! Of course you were looking, don't tell fibs! 😅

Are you anywhere near Kerry? Sera husky in Listowel often take in older dogs, there is also Animal Help net who rehome directly from owners who can't keep their dogs for some reason. I am sure somewhere there's a little terrier who would love to live with you....

If you're a border county maybe somewhere like Paws and People? They're based in Banbridge but I think they home over the border too.

For some reason I thought you lived in Kerry so thought Limerick was reasonable.

https://www.petadoptionwebsite.com/ this website compiles dogs from a lot of smaller rescues too. I've got my eye on Mickey but now is not a good time 😂

Try My Lovely Horse - they tend to be flexible
Thank you but not one I would consider using for personal knowledge and opinion.

Along with my other suggestions, Longford pound would be worth contacting.

Yes thank you, I know Hilary who runs and no idea why that didn't occur to me, I shall try her too.
