Aaargh Dalmation Chewing Everything!!!!

Hi;
I have a 1yr old dalmation that is OBSESSED with chewing anything it can find, also running off with it into the garden, and snatching food, washing up gloves, ect!
Does anyone else have the same problem! - Any ideas how to stop her doing this?!?!

Does she have toys? How much exercise does she get?
She may be a bit understimulated - also, she is still quite young!
You will need to nip in in the bud before she swallows something that doesn't agree with her.

Yeah we make sure that she gets loaaaads of execise and we are always buying her new toys, but they get chewed up aswell!

I have the same problem with my dalmation!!! We were told they are renowed thieves and will steal anything they can reach. Mine has lots of exercise to but doesn't really calm him down! We keep everything well out of reach of him at the back of benches etc but don't have any solutions for you sorry!
 
I do remember seeing a dally on 'It's me or the dog' who was the same, she could climb on the worktops and reach items her family had stuck on top of the oven hood

Hiia life begins yeah they never clam down! Do you have the problem of juping up/ licking face?

I know I say this on a lot of posts but try training her to focus on you, try and hold her gaze for as long as possible, the longer she looks up into your face, the more you reward her (she sounds pretty food orientated

This will make ANY sort of training infinitely more easy, if she is looking at you, you can then move on to giving her hand signals (bringing your hand up to your shoulder for sit, hand straight out for stay ect) hard to train a dog to do anything if it isn't paying attention to you x

Totally agree.
And with a younger dog it will be easy.
My old boy went deaf about 2 years before he died from an ear infection and we taught him hand signals pretty quickly.
 
He did jump up a lot but every time he did we pushed him back down again and he caught on pretty quick he wasn't allowed to do it! He gets on all the surfaces though and unless you catch him doing it you can't tell him off for it!
Wouldn't swap him though!
 
I had a deaf dalmatian inherited from a friend and she was very well trained, would sit, lie, stay, come, heel etc. She used to keep her eye on you when off the lead and responded very quickly to the signal for 'come'.

I am not sure that I could have trained her though! Perhaps try and find someone with experience of training deaf dogs?
 
I have had a lot of dalmatians and though none have been deaf I have always trained with hand signals and it has been easy . They are very bright and have alot of energy that needs an out let . If not exercised sufficeintly(sp) they will , as most dogs, entertain them selves in ways we don't like !! I don't know what you feed but try and keep the protien below 20 in a complete feed as that has been of help to other dalliesI have known .( in calming them somewhat) ETA Just stating experience so 'protien has no effect etc. on' people please don't start shouting at me ! !

I don't know if you have had a dally before but you also need to be aware of purine levels of food as it can cause bladder stones in dallies .
 
ypu could put her in a large cage, with water, when left for any period of time. minimlilize (cant seem to spell that!) the damage when you are not around
 
I have two dalmatians and they need a LOT of exercise and mental stimulation. They get bored easily so they amuse themselves

They were bred to run alongside carriages so they do need lots of work - how much does she get? Our bitch is a bit neurotic, which I think is quite characteristic of the breed, and will over groom to the point of hurting herself. She needs to be tired out every day so she comes riding with me whenever possible, comes running, gets 2 up to hour long walks a day, is outside in the garden all of the rest of the day if we're in...you get the idea. If she is allowed to get bored or doesn't get much exercise, she overgrooms (the dog used to get destructive like yours when he was bored).

So I would just suggest more exercise - exercise her til she drops! They thrive on it
