My horse has had an abcess which has come out of the bulb of his heel. I've been poulticing it since thursday and loads of pus has came out of it. How long should it take for all the pus to come out and for it to run clear?
Does it depend on the size of the abcess or is there an average time it takes?

Have you spoken to the farrier?

Is there anymore pus coming out? If there is no more pus coming out after a 24hr period I would not poultice it any more - or if you do a dry poultice is good.

My farriers coming tomorrow so I'll ask what he thinks. The pus is still seeping out, I've just changed the poultice again tonight and it still had quite a bit of pus (absolutely stinking!)

You need to poultice until all the puss had come out, I agree with the first comment once the puss has cleared up. Put a dry poultice on for 24 hours just to dry it out.
It sounds like it was a good abcess but you need to get it all out otherwise it will just keep reoccurring !
Good luck
