As for the pony-painter... She deserves far worse than she got, but they do say where there's no sense there's no feeling and she sounds like a prime example. So glad you got there in time.

However all she had actually done was catch your horse without your permission. Your actions were over the top. You assulted her and could have been arrested. Violence is NEVER an answer.

I think, Magicgirl, that you'll find that what she was about to do (paints etc. at the ready), was not only criminal damage, but animal cruelty.

You weren't there, how do you know what happened? What actually RP's reaction was in response to.

As RP says, it was totally out of character for her to take such action. As to the posts condoning the action are all the responses of people who feel passionately about their horses and will protect and defend them.

I wouldn't care what I was charged for, be it criminal or anything else. NO ONE touches my horse without permission, especially not to paint it, and as I knew her intentions she was lucky I didn't bury her.
Violence may not be your answer to things, but that doesn't work for everyone. From my OP you can tell the slap was out of character, but I would have done it again in a heartbeat, you obviously either do not own a horse, or do not care about people painting all over it... I honestly LOVE that horse, I go to lengths to wrap him up in cotton wool because he is such a thin skinned animal, and who else is going to protect him from the elements? I haven't got children, nor am I comparing it to mother's instinct, but I am sure 98% of the people on here would put themselves on the line for their horse, and I'm one of those.
As for other pranks, I can take things in good humour, you honestly do need to keep an eye over your shoulder at all times where jokes are concerned, which I usually do find quite funny and I suppose give as good as I get at times, but touching my horse was completely fifty strides over the line. I would never in a million years take anyone else's horse from its field, and if I did, I would expect a slap.

Whilst I don't condone violence, if you read the OP, the girl in question had also as much as admitted that she was going to go ahead with the "painting".

I am not saying that I would necessarily resort to violence under the same circumstance, but I do think it likely that I would come close to/if not doing so, to losing my temper...

Incidentally, I would actually rather object to someone catching or handling my horses without permission or reason.

Some may call it student pranks, but i, late middle-age, who has been at uni too, even lectured at a uni, would have simply floored your so-called friend + her male friends also if they ever dared harm one of my horses.

There's right + wrong, + anyone helping themselves to someone else's property without their permission is wrong, + is a criminal offence. If that 'property' is a live animal, then surely the criminal offence becomes more serious.

Bearing in mind, + understanding that you are at uni with these morons... So have you told your personal tutor? Maybe a peaceful solution can be made, if he/she intervenes in this childish thing, + gets to the bottom of why it happened, + why other students want to try to hurt your innocent animal. Are they using your horse to hurt you? Best advice is get your personal tutor involved.

If you get no support there, or from uni in general, then just go to the police.

And may your horse never be harmed, or lots of us will be very upset. BS x

Magicgirl - Yes, violence is not always the answer - but this is a slap not a full on fist fight and stabbing with knives. I don't quite see a slap as an assault, especially if it is in response to something quite infuriating.

In order to be able to "talk sense" into people, believe it or not, those people have to be free of intoxication, have a reasonable IQ level and some social understanding... which this girl certainly did not have. You often can't reason with people like that. With cases such as that, a slap might do wonders. This girl probably was never slapped ever - and that's why she does things without fearing the consequences. Remember how some kids keep on touching the hot plate on the stove despite many warnings from the mum... until one day, they burn their finger, it hurts, they cry... but the pain is then heavily imprinted in their brain and chances are - if they have any sort of intelligence - they'll never do it again.

Oh, and yes, all that girl had actually done was catch the horse without the OP's permission. BUT even in the court of law, INTENT is quite an important factor. INTENT is what makes the difference between murder and manslaughter after all. Even if you only had the INTENT to kill someone and got caught shortly before the act with everyone knowing what your intentions were, you would quite definitely not just walk about freely afterwards.

Maybe you should be separating slightly and finding another yard for your horse where your 'friends' have no right or reason to be, which would also give you some quiet time away from uni connections.
