I finally got brave tonight and added up what i spend on the horse (6yr old tb ex-racer) a year!:eek:
I have a calendar in the feedroom and put everything i get on there, hay/straw, farrier, dentist wormers,feed etc etc.
I also got a welsh saec a end of nov last year so that added abit more on.:D
Does everyone else keep account of what they are spending and brave enough to add it all up?
I know i dont spend nearly as much as alot of people but i think i was quite happy with the end result.
Works out about ........ £205 a month :) i was quite happy, will be abit more this year with pony added but not to bad.

So who else is brave to add it up?? (i may of forgot the odd little bit but that is pretty close)

Not me :)

And if I did, I'd have to hide the piece of paper I'd worked it out on from hubby, otherwise my horses would end up in Beeston!! :D

Oh goodness, first rule of horse ownership is NEVER add it all up! At least two good foreign holidays for a family plus car registrations over S reg! My husband still believes it cost £50 per month to own mine and my daughters horses! Three of us sat at my livery yard yesterday, my horse on box rest due to kick & stitches, my friends horse needs either lens implant or eye out and the third was having an "I cant ride" day. who would we convince that horse ownership is worth it ..... everyone.

I did it before buying my boy and what with my math skills being less than zero I came up with £128pcm... yeah, not so much ha ha! I think it actually works out around £100-£150 more than that roughly but am now too scared to actually add it up properly :rolleyes: I can cope with the extra that I didn't add in for but I just don't want to look at the numbers ha ha!

wow thats quite good really....
well my livery was near on £100 a week plus feed etc etc.... so for now I will not be thinking about the cash I blew away. :( :(

Yeah our yard is brilliant, he's on working livery so that helps too bearing in mind this is for summer months and depending on how quickly the hay and straw goes down I'll probably have to shell out some extra for more bales. I don't mind tho, having my lad and being at the yard has made me the happiest I've been in years so as far as i'm concerned he can have all my spare pennies and I'll live off of beans on toast ha ha! :D

My 2 horses cost me about £100 a month in summer and about £120 a month in winter :D Occasional extras they don't really need, but I want, I don't add onto this :)

I'm not working it out! I do think, whatever it is, it's worth it!

(H is on working livery, too - so not that bad really!)

mine pony costs me approx £80 per month last time i checked but he's since moved home and changed to hay so is cheaper than that - i am also contributing to another horse's care and buying boots/extra rugging/extra feed for her and that comes into the £80.

Just my livery cost comes to £3120 a year
Shoes £360 a year
Bedding £312 a year
Vaccs x2 plus call out £120
worming £90
feed £240
Hay £390
= roughly £4632. Probably a lot more, not likely to be less.

We did this last week at the BHS Horsecare class that I am doing - and the average between 6 of us was around £350 per month. This included livery (mostly DIY) and all other costs including farrier, dentist, back checks, vet, insurance, running a trailer/ lorry, competition fees, lessons, tack & rug repairs, etc. I think we covered everything. Can't believe some of you can do all this on only £150 per month! If you are we need to know your secrets :)

I moved into a new house that has some land so they are both at home now although supplimented with hay at times!

Livery = £24 a week DIY saving = -£1248
Farrier = £70 for one set of shoes and the mini one trimmed (about every 12 weeks, really really good feet and had to encourage the farrier to do them last time!) = £305 per year
Bedding = £0 they live out
Vaccs x2 including call out = £90
Worming = £90 for the year for the pair
Hay = 170 small bales a year = £675 (this year with some at £3.00 and the rest at £4.50)
Dentist = £60

This gives me a total of £1220 with a saving of £1248 on livery by having them at home (so I've halved my costs :)) or £102 per month for 2

Oh just remembered insurance was £360 for the big one, little one isn't insured. BHS Gold Membership which is £60?? Decided this year that the big one is being self insured as if he is alive another 10 or 15 years (17 now) then that is another £4k I'm giving away, yes it could cost me more but there not going to bring my policy down any!

This Maths has made me happy, I think I can justify creddible having another one possibly 2!?!

I wrote down everything I spent on my horse in a year about 6 years ago, the total came to £5000 near enough. But it did include absolutely everything, from buying carrots to rugs.I always knew I spent a lot on him, but I was quite shocked myself by this amount!

Has it made me see sense and be more 'responsible' with my money?
Afraid not....

Livery around £26 a week averaged out (inc hay and straw)
Farrier £25 a trim every two months
Dentist £40 once a year
Insurance £50 a month
Feed £30 every two months for 8 months of the year
Vaccs £70 a year (I think)
Wormer £60 a year
Replacing of horsey items around £300 a year.
So thats around £2692 a year or £51.77 a week :)

Mine average just under £150 a month, so taking account of hay in winter and so on, plus a few quid aside for vet bill excesses. That's for two but we do have cheap grazing at the moment!

It's actually come to less than I expected :)

I worked it out this time last year and I was spending over £700 a month for one horse on DIY :eek:.

This winter I have given myself a budget of £500 max a month and that's to include everything from hoof oil, to hay, to competitions.

The basic costs of keeping him, I.e the monthly bills not including comps or saddle fitters come to around £320 in the winter and £200-&220 in the summer.

I don't know how people manage to keep their horses for much less?! They must be field kept
Good doers with no shoes?!

I had to work this out last week as husband and I are reassessing our finances - had to see if we can afford to keep horse and pay for childcare... Not including competitions mine comes to around £200 a month on DIY. Husband is allowing me to keep him! Phew!

I have never actually added this up before as I always put my head in the sand with regards to spending money on them, but here we go….

Livery £25 per week = Month £100
Hay £12 per week = Month £48.00
Bedding £5 per week = Month £20.00
Shoe/trim £8 per week = Month £32.00
Insurance Month = £35.00
Feed Per month (4 horse) = £40.00
Total = £245 for one
4 X = £980

Wagon Storage £10 per month
Full livery for 2 horses £250 per month
Grand Total = £1240 per month

Then
Injection £60ish each
Dentist £50 per year each
Wormer £60 per year each
Total = £170 per year

This is not including rugs, tack, lessons, comps ect I am actually scared to add those extras on!!!

Surely my math’s have gone wrong!!
Double checking now with a calculator
