I don't dare do it.. Before I start livery is £300 pm, Farrier set of shoes every 8 weeks so £30pm, Insurance £70pm - So there's £400pm before I consider teeth, back, innoculations, supplements, feed, lotions and potions, rugs, rug housekeeping (cleaning, repairs et al), pony treats, carrots, apples. Fuel - it's a 30 mile round trip per visit - I go every day even though she's on full livery Mon-Fri...

So I think it best I stop right now LOL !

In summary - permanently broke but happy with my lot - my ponio is THE best therapist in the world. :D

2 horses at approx £800pm each horse including everything (inc 2 new rugs per horse per year and Lessons)

so nearly £20k per year for both horses - not including insurance and running the tow car which only gets used for the horses.

I know the essentials (livery, feed, bedding, farrier, etc) come in at around £250 PCM. But there's travel, tack, rugs, shiny new brushes, etc...

Can't put a price on the feeling that being near Ali gives me though. I think it's called happiness...

didn't do mine annually- £3840, not including other bits (I rarely buy new stuff, have heaps of it!), so round it up to £4000- don't do shows etc- not bad I suppose, for 2 horses, although my rent for me is only £2400- when you put it like that, maybe not so great!

I forgot teeth @ £70 a year for both of them and say £50 for saddle check. My horsebox is £200 for insurance, £118 for tax, say £70 for the summer on petrol, £60-70 entrance fees, horses insurance = £5572 - WHOOPS.

Luckily I have to collect OH's poultry food at the same time as picking up the horse food and that hides the true cost. Can't hide the hay bill though.:(
He's not too bad about it, he knows they make me happy.:D

You lot must be bloody good at juggling your money stashes - for a hardy cob who lives out unshod, unrugged and not fed an awful lot I allow £50pw... :\

I have no idea how some of you can afford to keep your horses the amount you spend on them  :D

I pay

£200 a year on rent, so thats £16.70 a month
£40 a month on hay from November to April
£30 on straw every two months
£80 for vaccinations and teeth rasp
£40 on food every two weeks
£10 every two months for his feet trimmed.

So my overall monthly cost is.... £105 (ish) :D :D

Granted I had to do all the fencing myself, and build the field shelters which has cost a lot but now I've done that, I'm saving myself a fortune! I'm hopefully getting another 2 ponies, which will only add about £50 a month onto my overall bill, if that.

If I got another 2, but kept them on livery I'd be paying £375 a month for livery alone

Approx £150 per month. (Averaged out over the year)

So that's for:
2 horses, 1 pony,
out 24/7,
all native v. good doers,
all v. good bare feet (off-road riding),
includes winter hay-bill,
grazing-rent,
wormers and feet trims.
All unrugged.

Does not include any extras (vet bills etc) or start-up/tack costs...so there are usually some big one-off expenses now and again such as saddles etc.
I don't compete and don't have a trailer currently.( Hope to buy trailer this year so that would be another big extra) But am in the middle of great off-road riding facilities so don't need to go far.

Value for money as far as I'm concerned!!!! :D

Easy! Own a cob!!! Next to no hay, front shoes only, which is every 10 weeks for us as they seem to last no problem atall, that's only £25. Pony club/lessons average out about £15 a month. Teeth are free as our dentist is a trainee and her boyfriend is the overlooking vet, bottle of wine! Not sure on insurance though.
Ok, maybe more than £30pm but still :D
Cob cob cob cob cob :D ;)

When I had one on DIY 10 years ago he cost me £224 a month.

I now have 3 at home with no stables and all they cost me is Hay ( huge bale at £25 one every 2 weeks in winter) = £300 ish yr
Farrier ( £28 each x 3 every 6 to 8 weeks depending on amount of road work as barefoot and season ) = £504.
Wormer as required as do poo egg counts ( approx £90 yr max)
Rug wash I do myself but a huge bottle of nikwax and reproofer is about £60 a yr
Vaccs and teeth for all 3 and call out (£200 ish)

Feed and vits I shall guess £20 a month as on fast fibre, speedi beet and pink powder and micronised linseed . = £240

No trailer to run :(
No lesson :(

= £1214 so thats £101.17 a month for 3

But if I included cost of buying paddock off my Dad at £120 a month and renting church paddock at £200 a yr it would add £136.

= £237.83 so still cheap compared to DIY livery :D But don't tell hubby as I am a lady of leisure and he'd tell me to get a proper job :(

I have never actually added this up before as I always put my head in the sand with regards to spending money on them, but here we go….

Livery £25 per week = Month £100
Hay £12 per week = Month £48.00
Bedding £5 per week = Month £20.00
Shoe/trim £8 per week = Month £32.00
Insurance Month = £35.00
Feed Per month (4 horse) = £40.00
Total = £245 for one
4 X = £980

Wagon Storage £10 per month
Full livery for 2 horses £250 per month
Grand Total = £1240 per month

Then
Injection £60ish each
Dentist £50 per year each
Wormer £60 per year each
Total = £170 per year

This is not including rugs, tack, lessons, comps ect I am actually scared to add those extras on!!!

Surely my math’s have gone wrong!!
Double checking now with a calculator

is that 4 horse's feed - then you times that by 4 again? how did you work out weekly shoe/trim?
still a heck of a lot though

Oh my god!!! Some of you have some seriously cheap (to keep) horses! I have one good doer cob and one fairly good doer IDxWB. My husband jokingly said the other day that if he'd not been spending £100 a week on my horses since he'd known me (9 years) he could afford a new BMW now! Scary thing was I didn't like to tell him that it's actually a lot more like £200 a week and has been since I bought my youngster (4 years ago), plus there was a time when daughter had her own pony (for 3 years) and so if I'm honest I'd say hubby has actually spent more like two new BMWs in the last 9 years.:eek::eek:

Lucky for me he doesn't really like BMWs isn't it? *Beetles off to go cuddle hubby and make him feel much more loved and wanted in case he ever figures it out*:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Not liking this thread much now!!!

I think mine averages out to be £300-400 a month :S I have to keep an eye on the amount i'm spending as i'm on a very tight budget. Strange how when I need to cut down its my food and life style that goes first :D

Late teenage native type, living out 24/7 at home in a very cheap part of the country works out as follows for the last 12 months:

Farrier - £160 (unshod)
Hay - £300
Feed - £240
Shavings - £100
Vet - £300 (includes booster, worm counts, wormers when needed and two call outs and a scan when he went lame)
Various bits of tack, brushes etc. - £150

Total for the year = £1300 or about £110 a month. That said, I've just had to order some Onduline sheeting for a new roof for the field shelter as the felt is starting to split and it's leaking, so that'll be £110 by itself. Husband is taking payment in kind for the labour though :D
