Addicted to buying horse gear?

I have loved reading all the posts on this thread,'When I was young'The only horsey things to buy were a canvas new zealand,a jute night rug and roller, which you tuned inside out and put straw between the rug and the sweaty horse(thatching).string girths, everything was brown or black.or white.travel bandages were woollen and tail bandages stretchy.plain brushes, that was about it.Me I had non stretch jods that had buttons down the side to do them up.jod boots with straps and a tweed hacking jacket,a cardboard hat, string gloves and an off white waterproof riding mac. Ah those were the days.hahaha.not really how lovely to have all the choice and colours that are available now.Happy buying.

Oh dear! Similar here, just starting out on the matchy journey. And even actually using them shock horror. And am often cruising Amazon eBay etc for bits of gear. Most recent was a rash of new tops and jodhs which makes a change that it's actually for me.

Fortunately I don't really "do" matchy. I do like nice looking saddlecloths though.

I like expensive leatherwork though. :( I used to have a rug additiction but I someone seem to be cured of that one now, haven't bought one for years

I got the cob fully clipped out, hogged and legs off and it opened up a whole new world of matchy matchy! He could never wear bandages before due to the copious amounts of hair. But now he can and he seems to have amassed an alarming amount of it!

Spend your disposable income as you wish. But these are hard times for some and it would be nice to maybe make a donation to a food bank , or maybe a horse charity, also.

I love how the advert on this thread for me is the capital one credit card!!

My just turned 3 year old acquired some snazzy diamanté over reach boots last week, he'll look fabulous in them!

I worked damned hard for my wage and I will spend my disposable income exactly how I please thank you!

:D Quite right.

I was at Can-Am in Toronto yesterday (met Tommy Turvey, oh and Amber Marshall was there too) and somehow came home with yet another bit to try out, new clippers (they were reduced ;) some magic leather cleaner (it had better be for the price it was) and a pair of Mountain Horse boots that I didn't need, but they fitted (good enough reason eh? ) AND they were only $60. For the first time in 10 years looked at some breeches , when did they get SO expensive? Kerrits $200! They stayed on the hanger. I did come home with a sack full of samples and giveaways though, huge limps of rock salt and 8 weeks worth of ulcer powder in sample packs.

I am very thankful that I was outbid on a massive original painting (I stopped at $500) OH would have gone bananas, even if it was worth $2000.

Agree! Also, how does anyone know what charitable donations people may make alongside spending their earnings on whatever they choose?

I have out grown my addiction to spending on horse gear...I tend to only purchase to replace. That said, I've had quite a few replacements recently....

I wish I could afford a "habit" but I can't so only buy essentials and even then it's a bit of a pinch!

All my horse's stuff matches though as he inherited all the saddle pads from my old horse so they are all black or green, although in various stages of turning grey :) He doesn't wear boots or wraps or fly fringes so I don't need to stress about getting the right colour...

And anything new he has, apart from his tack (second hand saddle, new bridle) has been given to me so he has a posh navy blue saddle pad, never yet used, as a navy blue fleece - presents from the same person who obviously likes navy blue. Not my favourite but OK by me as it's dark.

Now, if I won Euromillions....

I tend to stick with what we need and repair or replace as things wear out. I like very specific good quality things and decide that no substitutes will do, so I'll buy one expensive thing rather than several cheaper ones.

Unfortunately at the moment I'm a bit skint so a new lightweight jacket (which I do need as lost a lot of weight and sold the old one) is having to wait. The one I want is £90 and I am refusing to settle. Thankfully I lost enough weight to get back into my fleece lined blouson, which isn't as warm as my winter coat!

ETA - I am however addicted to making lists of things I'd like to buy when I have the funds ;)

This. The only reason I started down this slippery slope was because my horse broke, I was no longer spending money on lessons and competing so thought I would get something nice for when he came back in work. He was a very well dressed light hack until pts.
Now I'm horseless, I know that I won't have the cash to spare as much once I get another so why not buy a few bits while I can.
I buy good stuff once rather than cheap twice. All the saddle cloths will last me years with the way I look after stuff.
It bugs me when people come on and preach about what I should do with my cash, after all they don't know what I do with the rest of it.

And with my last horse I had a bad rug habit, I personally think the saddle cloth habit is much cheaper and takes up far less room!

I get paid next week. This month's spare cash had to go on lorry insurance. Once paid I'll be ordering the Le Mieux Turquoise and Blueberry saddle pads :) Also got my eye on that grooming glove thingy in the new Horse Health catalogue. I'm rather taken by the Burnt Orange Le Mieux saddle pad ...hmmmmmmm

My weak point is saddles...

I have bought three new saddles in the last three months.. I only have one horse. Whoops! (Although his old GP doesn't fit him anymore, and I want to do a bit more jumping, plus the dressage was an absolute steal!... The purchases were therefore totally reasonable). :D

The new Horse Health catalog is dangerous! My student loan comes in next Monday and I'm eyeing up most of the products :p.

Then I hope that you have all you Uni stuff paid! :D I work in Finance at a Uni and the amount of students that come in not able to pay the final portion, having p***ed their loan up the wall would make you pull your hair out!

Student Finance pay my fees directly to the uni (thankfully!). This is just the maintenance loan which is actually the 'buy stuff for the horse' fund ;). I'm very fortunate to be in the position I am in!

I lived with a guy who was fully into a £3.5k overdraft by the end of the first year :O. Scary stuff.

I'm addicted to matchy 😳 I can't seem to help myself, although I have slowed down since acquiring 2 extra horses. Although now I find myself needing a new bridle for my youngster and wanting the stubben equisoft girth and a new martingale for the big lad and a new noseband for my other horse, I could go on and on 🙈

I am extremely good at crying over 3k saddles whilst my horse didnt even cost a 3rd of that and trying to justify it for something that isnt in work. I'm also good at personalised show fleeces. Again, the horse is not in work, does not show, and I do not even have transport to take him to shows. But i NEEED it
