Adults who ride ponies - help needed

Depends on how he takes your leg up really, but I'd say you'll probably be fine. My friend is about 5'8 and her Highland is 14.1hh - she looks fine on him as he is quite chunky. I think he rides a lot bigger than that too :)

I am 5'11. I used to ride my friends Section D. It was not a problem, he had the body of a 16.2 horse, just short legs and short neck. I quite fancy a highland myself.

In the second photo you can see I look pretty lanky!!! However, your highland will be chunkier so will take up more of your leg. It's all about how you feel. If you and your pony are comfortable, don't worry about what other people think :)

I'm 6' 1" and ride a 14.2hh New Forest. He has a barrel chest, so takes my leg with ease.

He's not as 'chunky' as he was last year, we both went on a diet over the winter.

I'm five foot six and 10 .5 stone and I ride a 14hh Highland for nmy riding lessons and I look fine on him. He is more than able to take my weight and because he's chunky he takes up my leg. Congrats on the purchase, we just bought a two year old highland - they are addictive when you get to know them.

I'm 5'7" and have just bought myself a 14.3hh arab. I was looking for a 15hh+ but when I sat on Gold my worries about my height just didn't seem important any more. He takes up my leg well and rides big, and most of all the two of us are happy with each other. I will always look taller on him than I would on a 16hh, but what does it matter if I look tall? I am tall!

This is a BIG contentious point for me. So much so I have been told to sell him which I am in the process of doing.

I am 5"5, just under 10st.

He is 14h1, fne, short backed NF gelding.

My mother is a leggy 5'8" and used to ride my 14.2 Anglo - he was quite a narrow little horse too. Yes, she looks better on our 16.2, but she looked absolutely fine on the smaller chap. :)

My 4yo arab is about 14.2 (ish) and is a very fine arab - I'm about 5'7" (ish!!). This is me on him

I also ride a 13hh pony as well - we *think* that she is a NF x.

OP - I think you will be fine on a highland :)

My new forest is only 13.2 and I am 5.2ft and about 8 stone. My friend who is 5.8ft and about 10 stone has had a ride on him and was fine. Highlands are quite wide round the barrel and should be easily able to take your height and weight.

Well I'm 5.2ft so quite a bit shorter than you. I am out of proportion though and (luckily I admit) I've got quite long legs so tend to need a slightly bigger pony to take it up.

But this is me on my sisters fell who's only 13hh:

I think you should go and try him out to see how you feel. Also take a photo of yourself on him and see how you look :)

I am only 5'2" and ride a 14hh broad Fell. In fact I've been told that I would look ridiculous if she were any bigger as they do take up your leg really well and my stirrups are practically half way up her sides when shortened for faster work (In fact I look bigger on a skinny 16.2.)
I'd also say that a Highland will be fine!

This is me riding my mums Highland pony who is just shy of 14hh, i'm a good 5'6'' with long legs and in the picture below im riding in dressage length stirrups.

I find riding Islay is no different to riding a 16.2/3 really she's just a very big horse on tiny legs im sure you'll have no problems riding a 14.2 Highland especially if its a mature one as well. The above photo was taken last spring when Islay was 6, she has since really filled out and matured and i now look like a pea on a drum!! Good luck with going to try it, Highlands are a fantastic breed!!

I think you'll be fine as chunky natives take up the leg really well.

Here's a pic of my friend riding my 13.1hh Fell, she's the same height as you.

I'm 5ft3 about 10st and ride my 12hh welsh x and my 13h1 welsh x, they both cope fine doing jumping and long distance. Pic's in my siggy.
OP i dont think you would have a problem...

I think you'll be fine, a highland will be a big chunky think which is the main thing.

I am 5ft 7 and have a 13.2 welsh. Yes I do look a bit big, but my feet don;t dangle below his belly as he is a chunky monkey.

Monty&Zoom - I love zoom!! She looks fab.

Neil - loving your pony too and sooooo nice to see a man on a ponio!

And finally Berkley - you are kidding????? Who on earth has told you to sell?
