personally i dont like seeing adults on anything under 14.hh i think it looks a little bit silly to tell you the truth but thats just my opinion.I think shorter people or shorter legged people can get away with it more but i know one girl who insists she likes riding ponies because they are fun now she has moved onto horses turns out she is just so used to ponies she struggles with horses, and she is 20 dont get me wrong she is good at getting little ponies moving forward but no idea how to slow a horse dwn.
i guess it depends on the persons height and weight. I have a 13.3hh and my mum is really too small to ride it, but she is very short. I guess some adults have had the pony since they were children or teenagers and are too attached to it to sell them but I generally think adults look better on horses if they are average height or taller
I have a 14hh Highland pony and am an adult and do not look too big on her, you have to take into account the fact that not all ponies have the same build
Ooops york mummy, i think that I also sound abit like the girl that you are talking about. I can get your average pony to work miracles but put me on a horse and it all goes down the swanni i'm affraid!! Although i did get on rather well with my old bosses 17.3 thoroughbred.
that one in your pic really is it that small well built little thing isnt it and i did however say that shorter people or people with shorter legs can get away with it in my first reply.

trust me i dont think you could be half as bad as this girl all she does is pull and kick and she seems to think she is the best rider in the world and tells everyone else how to ride.
Her idea of checking a horse is just pulling its mouth without letting go for a second so all she is doing is causing perfectly nice easy horses to run through the bridle.
But the worst bit is she wont admit its her fault its always because of the horse even though he never puts a foot wrong bless him.
I don't think (or hope anyway) i'm that bad. I did try a horse but every thing was awful and in the end I sold her and was never going to own a horse again, then I saw this welsh section D for sale and my OH said we should go and see her and I just fell head over heels in love!
im 25 and my pony is 13hh!! im only 5'5 and weigh 8 stone when not pregnant, im pretty paranoid that i look daft on him tho. He was on loan with view to buy as a pair with a 15.2hh who died before we paid for them, tinker was for my son, well he still is but josh is only 3 so only toddles around on him at the moment!
People can be snobby about these things but I love April even though she isn't mine, she is fab to ride and looks like a mini horse anyway and suits me as i am a short ar$e anyway
I much prefer ponies - particularly highland ponies (which is just as well since I have two at the yard), they are deep through the chest, and can easily carry an adult - and I don't care who thinks I look silly!
At the end of the day theres only 8 inchs between a 14hh and a 16hh and tbh its mostly leg. I know some people will disagree with this but i think its true, my stirrups come to about the same point on my welsh d's body as my 16.1 idxtb's.
well I'm 21, 5ft 11 and ride ponies - I win the prize idiot award. Funnily enough it doesn't look that bad either.
If the ponies are capable of carrying your weight than I don't see the problem, especially for the native breeds. People don't give them the credit they deserve weight carrying and purpose wise IMHO
My Po is 14.2 and I reckon just right for my 9.5 stone and short legs, I'm 53, he turns on a sixpence and is great fun, well after the broken collar bone healed anyway, horses seem all legs to me and feel like riding a giraffe.
Reading this post got me thinking im breaking alfie for me to ride im 22 and 4 foot 11 do you think he will be 2 small for me? I resused him so will nevr be sold
I'm another adult who rides ponies I'm afraid. Despite being 5' 5" I have short legs and still look fine on 12.2hhish upwards. My own mare is 13.2hh. I like native ponies and while I happily ride 'proper' horses when I have to I don't see why I should stop riding ponies just because I'm over 18
