Advantage

Advocate is prescription only - so to buy online you need to cost in a consultation with your vet and a fee for the prescription and funnily enough once you do that, there is often no saving over buying direct from the vet... If you know anybody who comes and goes from Australia it can be bought over the counter there. I work with a load of Aussies and despite them thinking I'm slightly mad they happily bring it back from home for me :) It's the only flea/worm treatment I rate mainly because it works for lung worm too...

Advantage isn't a POM and can be ordered online with no problems. I would just make sure that any site you use has a (proper) UK address/landline and is registered with the RVCS which is a legal requirement I think.

We have to use Advocate to prevent Heartworm, our vet says to use it monthly from April to November inclusive to cover heartworm which is in our local dog walking park. In the winter I use drontal plus.

What I don't like about it is that the bit which works against fleas is weakened every time the dog is in the water, now with a lab who loves swimming this is a bit annoying. Also it does nothing against ticks (which are common in our park) and tapeworm. Now according to the vet if the dog never has fleas then it won't get tapeworm because it needs fleas to live it's life cycle, but then my worry is by the dog swimming then it will get fleas so then I'll have to do the dog with drontal plus in the summer as well!

I am just using up my advocate then I am going to ask about using millbemax which is now licensed for heartworm prevention, combined with a flea/tick treatment or collar.

Just for info, Milebemax works against lung worm as well now :)

Thanks cbmcts. Which would you say was the best of the two?

I've never used Advantage so I really can't say! Sorry. I do think the prescription only ones seem to be better albeit more expensive.

Interesting to hear that milbemax works on lungworm, does it cover mange and earmites too?

Milbemax is now licensed to prevent and treat lungworm, but only if used monthly. It also covers tapeworm, roundworm, hookworm and prevents heartworm. Not mange, mites, lice etc.

OP I would go for advocate, purely for the extra worm protection. Advantage looks to have the same amount of imidacloprid insecticide (depending on vial size) as advocate does, although minus the worm protection. I do not have much experience with advantage, but looks to maybe be a better alternative to frontline without having to have a prescription?

As said already Advocate is a very good products, does most things other than tapeworm. Advantage is a over the counter treatment. For those concerned about treating for heartworm, tying using a prescription flea tablet called Trifexis, fairly new product. Does fleas and some worms, including heart worm.

Amymay - I just pop into my vets and buy Advocate over the counter so to speak as they know me and dog so don't have to pay for a consultation etc. and they know I'm perfectly capable of applying it myself despite being blond ;-)

Thanks Nicnac. I'm happy for a consultation, in fact it would be sensible on this occasion as she's now 8 months and hasn't been weighed since they saw her at 12 weeks.

The only issue I may have is that I'm not sure they offer anything other than Frontline. But I'll cross that bridge if I come to it, and change practices if needs be.
