Sending him away now is the best thing. When he is ready can you go and ride him a couple of times - perhaps at a weekend if you are working - then have him back and turn away. Send him back next year, just for a week or two to get him started again and hopefully all will be fine then. Good luck. Youngsters are such fun!!

I think they like to do at least one handover ride. I'm hoping I will be able to swap some of my teaching with colleagues so I can visit in his last week.

I think I need to dial down the pressure on myself not to mess him up and dial up the fun!!

I just bought a 2 year old! My first youngster and I’m a huge fan of Richard Maxwell so bought his birth to backing book! He suggests that the owner/ handler is not the one to actually back the horse but they should be on the ground as the security! Also that hacking on own to begin with is better than following another horse! I guess that hopefully avoids the nappiness? My plan is to get a friend on board while I walk beside her! I plan to do loads of long reining next year when she is 3 in field and then on road, lightly sit on her in Autumn and properly back when she is 4!
