I need some help, my story is that I brought on a horse for a man as a project as other people had struggled and failed with him, I told him i couldn't afford to have my 2 in livery and a third one so he was to help out towards that and if he was to be sold i would have half of the money, any way I've had him for over a year and he had come on really well, he was far less nervous and trusted me, everyone had commented at what a good job i had done and how well he was looking. I had paid for all his shoeing, wormer, bedding, hay, chiropractor fees, saddle fitting and a second hand saddle for him, I thought of him as my own, the owner said i could do what i wanted with him. The horse had developed two huge splints one on each leg, they dont affect him they are just a bit unsightly, and only within the last few weeks the owner wanted to take him away to blister him, I viewed my opion that i was not happy with this, i think it is unessesary. Within the last week i've had to move house and move horses with me, my own 2 and the one i have beening doing. I had told the owner that i was moving i hadn't told him where cos at the time i had saw him i was uncertian where i was going to but i had to be out from the place i was in. In the mean time I had to turn the horses out in a field opposite where i had recently moved until i had found stabling for them in the new area. Tuesday of this week i had come home from work, went to see the horses out in the field for a check to find that the horse that i had been working had been taken, he was in a field with 4 others i knew he had not be stolen, but that the owner must of taken him. I felt sick, I tried to ring him but no answer, i spoke to a friend who knew him and they got hold of him gave them a piece of their mind and told him to ring me. He had taken the horse and had already taken him away that day to be blistered, understandably i kicked off, i was so upset and angry for what he had done, I've had no money off him for anything, and he said I wouldn't be getting him back, I've improved this horse so much, so now he will sell this horse for a lot more than what he bought him for, and i only found out the other day he bought for £100 from the knackers! where do i stand? can citizens advice do anything for me? He said if i wanted to buy him, he wanted £2000, i had done all the work and put money into him. Please any advise??

I very much doubt there is anything you can do OP. The man owns the horse and it seems he has taken advantage of you. I think you'll have to chalk this one up as experience. x

I don't think you have a leg to stand on. You have no contract and it is his horse. And, frankly, if someone moved, took my horse with them, didn't tell me exactly where you and the horse would be, and left it in a field with no arranged stabling facilities - no matter what the arrangement or circumstances, I too would turn up take it away and cease further contact.

Sorry if you think it harsh. Chalk it up to experience and next time get a contract.

Do they still blister horses for splints? I thought that went out with the ark, but perhaps not.

I am afraid I agree with HaffiesRock - unless you have a written contract or witnesses to a verbal agreement, you have not got a hope of getting anything back.

Try not to lose it with the owner, it is his horse so he can do what he pleases, and he will only get more defensive and feel justified in not giving you anything.

Bestdoddash, the owner knew that the horse had a good home with me and I looked after him very well, I would go for months not hearing from him or him asking how the horse his, he knew i was moving that that once i was settled and get to know the area i would find livery/stabling, he was well rugged buy rugs that i had bought cos the owner wouldn't replace his old rug which was too ripped to use.
Ducktoller, yes sadly they do still blister, I think it is not needed, he has had these splints for over a year and i told him surely they are to old to do anything with, its just a matter of time and they will get smaller!

Afraid I agree that there is little to be done at this stage in the game. As they say, possession is 9/10th the Law and the legal owner now has his horse back. Who holds the passport (not that that proves ownership)? He may ask for that back if you still have it.

I would consider what you've had with this horse a loan without a contract. You had sole use of the horse and were responsible for his up keep and care during that time. Verbal promises count for very little IMO. Next time, if there is one, make sure you get everything water-tight and legally signed.

And I also agree, moving another person's horse without informing in advance where it will be move to is a bit naughty. I guess he found out soon enough where his horse was, but out of courtesy the owner should be kept fully up to date on what's happening.

All the same ((( Hugs ))) as it's never nice to lose a horse you've cared for and worked with, especially without warning and under such circumstances. I am sorry it panned out this way. x
