Just wanted to ask in other peoples experience with owning horses,

(ive owned horses for 7 years or so but i know there are those of you out there that have owned horses for 20, 30 + years)

What would you say is the limit of the capabilities of a 15.2 Irish Draught X. Hes not the lean sporty type he has more of a hunters frame, currently jumping around 2ft9 well, schooling okay, can be quite strong but working on it. Hes 7 Years old. Very brave and never refuses anything.

I personally would like to do affiliated showjumping at some point, whether he would be up to that standard i dont really know, i would never sell him but if people would advice getting another horse to bring on for more serious competition then that is what i will look into

It seems a random question, i love my boy and would like to take him to his full potential, but i dont want to push him further past that if this makes any sense at all!!

Advice please :)

It does depend what he is crossed with but the majority of IDs can jump a house if that way inclined. Before warmbloods came on the scene the majority of Grade As would be either IDs, ID x TB or full TB so don't doubt their ability if jumping is their forte`.

Every horse is different and there is no reason why your horse can't achieve high levels. He will tell you when he has reached his maximum potential so don't worry about pushing him further than his ability. Heather Honey was a famous ID x international showjumper with Paul Darragh (IRE) in the 80's - she was only 15.2HH and won lots of classes. She wouldn't be able to compete with today's standards but she was superb for her time.

I ride a 14 hand Irish pony breeding unknown but she jumps 4ft. I wouldn't worry to much about breeding, They are all different in their abilities. Just keep jumping until he tells you he has reached his limit.

Ive got a 15.1 id x , she was a show cob, been slimmed right down and now gone into jumping as she really loves it :) so far were up to 3ft3 working on style on tecnique, shes also can be a strong girl. I hope to affiliate in 2014 when we ve out and about more.

Hi have a 7 year old Irish draught he's not a sporty type ( built for comfort not speed )but we have a go at everything he has 34 BD points he will happy jump 3ft all day long any higher than that and it's beyond my capabilities not his love Xcountry we are going to aim to do a BE 80 class in 2013
your horse sounds really genuine and I think he will let you know if your pushing him too much Irish draughts are really intelligent and having owned 3 have found they love to have a job to do mine have always got really stale when they have time off ect
I think as long as your horse is fit enough and enjoying it then go for it good luck x:)
