Well as some of you know I was booted by him the other day in the field. He has the roam of 23acres with 2other horses but as he has no headcollar on atm catching him is a challenge to say the least- even when he does have it on, I have to bring the other two down before he even contemplates being caught. Now this has only been a problem in the summer, he is in a routine during his working monthes and will always come in for his tea. After yesterday's dull moments I have phoned mum and asked her what I can do (live on a big dairy farm and have only one paddock which must be saved for winter with the ground being so crap now)
I can either take my chances with electric fencing which Montycob has no fear of, or as of next week I can stable him at night. I need to ride him every day now to get him fit, little idea anyone? x

I wouldn't do the electric fencing - accident waiting to happen.

When he is in at night will he come in ok? I think if I were you, he would have to come in, if he's good let him out everyday, if not just turn him out a couple of days a week??

How are you feeling today?

Im just in a mess because I want him to hold his weight as much as possible, I need him to be in a smaller field so he is easier to catch but Daddy Dave needs his fields mahoosive for his Tractors. When he gets into routine he is dead easy to catch, comes in for his supper, I just need him where I can catch and get fit now

Do you keep him at home, could you bring him in first thing and feed him, then leave him in & ride him in the PM. This way he'll learn he comes in and immediately gets fed?

Ours are also on 50 acres & this is how we got them to come to call....

J- he is at home. At the moment I have to catch my other two horses before I can get near him, its just him and the summertime I think, so my options are smaller fields- less space to piss off into or stabled at night, but if I do this he might drop the weight too quickly.

Yea thats a good idea, if they have had there fill over night then they are normally happy to come in in the morning, I would normally say because of the flies but don't think theres any chance of those at the mo!

It might sound stupid, as probably something you've tried, but what about fetching him in, doing all his usual routine (feed groom etc) then putting him back out? That way he knows he's going to get fed whe he comes in, and after a while it'l become habit and he'll be more easy to catch.

I suppose if he's got weight issues he prob wouldnt be as enticed by the feed bucket idea as my greedy little natives!

Have you got a quad bike

thats how we used to catch one of the riding school ponies!

I'm sure he wouldn't drop the weight before he starts working?

Our horses haven't had proper turn out this summer, and Badger hasn't got as fat as last year, I'm hoping that doesn't mean he will get any thinner, but only time will tell!

With Oshk though, he doesn't get thinner and thinner as the season progresses does he? Just drops his weight and then thats his winter weight. If he's going to be dangerous then it's not worth messing about just for the sake of him carrying a few extra pounds.

Well yes he always drops to just what he can live on and works at that weight all winter, I just didn't want him looking poor for cubbing as well as all winter through. Thinking about it this time last year he was in horsepital at Liverpool and stabled full time then anyway so it would be this same as last year. Will probably end up bringing something else in to keep him company too. Argh.

Are you catching him just to feed him or to ride him?

If it's to ride him - have you just considered turning him away until you really need to get him up and fit for hunting?

I don't remember ever hearing you say that you've turned him away for a holiday - and maybe he just needs a break.........

I think you've answered you're own question really as you say he doesn't become a pain to catch if he is in a strict rountine. Bring him in every day at the same time if possible and feed him, then ride, it usually works for the horse we find hard to catch as our main field is as big as yours and we have had to remove all 13 other horses on numerous occassions to catch this one for the vet, farrier etc
