I've put this in the Hunting bit as I thought the peeps there may be more used to doing this but as yet no replies so thought I'd try this lovely bit of HHO!!!!

Anyway, my YO is away this week and I've offered to get one of the hunting liveries ready tomorrow in her absence. Not a problem re plaiting mane etc but the livery has requested that the horse's tail is plaited 'up' (like polo ponies) as its going to be a bit muddy!

Can anyone advise me on how to do this please - I'll be armed with bands, thread and tape!!

Thanks in advance!!!

Plait the top bit like a normal plaited tail, then carry on with one big plait all the way to the bottom..

I usually fold the tail outwards as horse has VERY thick tail. I fold it onto thirds and secure with lots of electrical tape.

It's not the neatest but it stays in.

Tail is so thick I have never found a better way.

If the tail is pulled at the top then plait into a long plait and then fold up.

Min is pulled which is slightly different. For smart days I do it like this:

I start plaiting normally just below the pulled bit (which should have had more pulled in the middle as it's a bit scruffy). Once I get to the bottom of the dock I add all the rest of the tail hair into the plait. Fold it over twice then sew it to the dock (not literally - ouch!).

For not-so-smart days I just plait the main section of the tail in one big plait, fold it over twice (on the outside this time) then secure with four lots of tape. It has never come down and looks perfectly smart if the tail's nicely pulled. I also do this for XC eventing on very muddy days.

Shall take a picture sometime of the taping method! K9h does lovely tails and has some pics if you ask her nicely.

I do exactly the same as Thistle... even though the tailed is pulled... ie... plait all the way down and then fold into thirds & hold up with black bandage tape. Looks ok actually, but sorry have no pics.
We use the same method for hunting & polo.

My put up tails look like this...

They are folded 2-3times depending on the length of the tail and put up on the outside, and fixed with electric tape.

This is the ultimate 'put up' tail IMO - You can't really tell from this pic, but the length of the tail is put up INSIDE the plait, if that makes sense?! I need to get an Aussie or Zimbo to teach me how

Sorry just saw PM! Not been on all day!

Seeing as you asked nicely!

Anyhow I do a normal tail plait & then just carry on with the plain plait to the bottom. Band that, fold a third up & stitch up that amount then fold that on itself again & stich that up.
Sometimes feel like I could use a knitting needle for it but manage with a normal one.
I stitch in the v made where the hair comes across (if that makes sense?) You can just see the thread in the pic. Alternating sides.

Always stay up & clean.

Wow K9H that is really impressive, wish I could do hunters tails like that it looks so neat, instead of having all the electrical tape on. I would never get it to look that good. I will have to stick to pulled tails and lots of washing when I get home!!!!!

OMG.....that is so tidy!! Thanks for posting the pic for me..... better set my alarm for early if thats what is expected!!!!

Sadly it takes practice!!

I am sure you will do a fantastic job. The hardest part is the top plait. Then the rest is easy! Either with tape or thread.

Oh & we want pics tomorrow!!

thanks for this thread. it's going to be muddy o sunday so i'm also going to attempt this as fed up with muddy, straggly tail post-hunting. i dont have time to be sewing it in like all these posh, lovely looking plaits though - gonna try the electrical tape method!
