Hi guys, my sister is selling her daughters pony, it is sight unseen, people have had pony vetted, transporter due tomorrow. They have only paid a third (900) 1800 is remaining. They are saying they want the pony delivered and then they will pay the remaining 1800 on arrival but it may take a few days to show in the account due to it being the wkend. My sister has explained that she feels uncomfortable letting the horse go 250 miles (5 hours) to someone she has never met. The buyers are saying they feel uncomfortable paying the whole amount to someone they have never met, but this is their decision saying it is too far to travel. My sister have offered they come and collect the pony themselves but they are refusing. The transporter is due at 11am. SO would you let the pony go and trust them or politely refuse? She is not experienced with selling horses so any advice welcome. Thanks in advance ;-)

no it creates a minefield of potential complications. Money in account then the pony can go but to be honest would want to see the home the pony is going to also.

no way. What happens if the pony arrives and they then say they aren't paying the rest or that the pony isn't what they want and they refuse to pay all of it. They had the pony vetted and it passed so they brought unseen. I wouldn't let the pony go without full payment. Unless your sister knows the transporter well and they are happy to return the pony at buyers expense if pony isn't paid for then no way would I be happy to let the pony go. As for paying and it not showing up for a few days, how exactly are they intending to pay the money into your sisters account? If they can pay it in on a sunday then it should show up pretty much instantly unless it's via a cheque but can't see how they can do that on a sunday.

absolutely not, your sister will either not get any more money or they will say something is wrong with the pony upon arrival and try to beat her price down - don't let the pony leave until all money is paid in full. Or, do, and expect to lose money.

Thanks guys, exactly my thoughts but wasn't sure if i was being harsh! You can't go get a car and pay for it when you feel like it so a horse should be no different. I think she is getting herself In a state too as it's all
Very emotional for her and she doesnt know what to do

Also just a thought but I wouldn't be happy selling my horse to someone I'd never met as I quite like to vet prospective owners whilst they're viewing my horse.

Your sister has nothing to stress about, either they pay the full amount or pony doesn't get on the transporter - simple!

Not suprised she is emotional but tell her to be strong and tel them they can collect when the money is in her bank account

Your sister shouldn't feel pressured into letting the pony go without full payment. Yes, they may be totally honest or they could say the pony arrived with an injury and won't pay the rest. If she loses the sale over this at least she still has the pony. If she sends it she could lose the pony and her money.
I am amazed the buyers think this is ok.

What a cheek! You wouldn't walk out of Sainsburys with a trolley full of shopping and tell them you'll pay them when you get it home! I would insist on the CASH, in my hand, before the pony is loaded. And tell her to write them a receipt!

ETA: I'm not sure I'd even SELL the pony to this family, TBH. They sound dodgy already....

Had a similar situation with a livery that was sold but had met the buyers twice and it was not 5 hours away more like 3, they had problems with transferring directly to the account and the transport was already here waiting to load, so we arranged for them to get cash, the owner traveled with the horse, saw it into the new home got the cash and came back with the transporter who fortunately did not have to go too far out of their way.

No way it would go off with transporters I did not know, to an unknown destination/ new owners, anything could happen, genuinely or otherwise, I would probably do as we did above, go with it, if you can, collect the money and meet the new owners that way there is no room for error.

if they want to take the risk of buying unseen they need to pay in full before the pony travels, even if they are honest (which i doubt) who's pony is it it there is an accident and the pony is injured?

Just a thought, but I vaguely remember a scam along these lines. Buyer gets horse for a fraction of what they were sold as - then claim horse is injured or has reared and injured them, then say not paying full amount but will stick to what they have paid already. they hope the seller will give up as transporting back is expensive and I have heard of the buyer threatening legal action as pony hurt them etc....I also would not be inclined to sell to these people...it sounds very very unsafe to me.

They have agreed to collect the horse with the rest of the money next weekend! My sister is not happy as she has given her stable up and was told the pony was going tomorrow, transporter also let down, and my sister now has to wait another week ;-(
