Hello,

I am soon to be joining you!! I have today reserved a lovely 18 month old staffy cross from the RSPCA.

Hopefully I will pass the home check!

I will be introducing her to my 2 cats and was wondering the best way to go about this? I will be getting a stair gate for the kitchen door so the cats can get away from her if she becomes too much for them.

I was also wondering if anyone can recommend training classes or advise on carrying on her training? She knows a few basic commands like sit and paw and down.

Thanks in advance

First thing I would do before even letting her in the house os to take her for a good long walk so that she gets rid of some of her energy and during that walk make her A) walk to heel, B) practise her obedience and make her do what you want immediately.
Going into the hose make sure that she walks in BEHIND you and that no one makes a great fuss of her. Do not allow her to go bouncing all around the house, for the start make her stay in the kitchen and only into the other rooms when you invite her.
Staffies are wonderful dogs BUT they are tough and need to be treated very firmly but fairly. They respect discipline and are happier to have someone take the lead.

If you are crating her I would have her in the crate and let the cats come into the room. If she shows excited interest in them correct her with a word if you are not crating her then have her on a leash and correct her if she shows undue interest.

Good luck to you, be firm, fair and have fun.

Did the RSPCA cat test your new dog? As a great staffie lover, I second the whole "wear her out" thing as a tired staffie is a much easier dog to manage

Look forward to seeing pictures and its briliant that you have taken on a staffie x - any idea what the cross is?!

Hiya,

Thanks for the replies. They have cat tested her and she does not seem to be very interested in them. They said they will be doing some more with her while they wait for the home check.

She is quite small for a staffy so I am thinking JRT as kinda looks like she has some JRT in her. The RSPCA dont know what she is crossed with.

You can all guess when I get her and post the pictures!
