history: 5 year old cob, backed at 4 then turned away for 6 months, then been hacking (walk and trot only) since

he has never been what id call 'light' in the mouth when i bought him, however over past 1-2 months i have moved to somewhere with a school and he became a bit more responsive to the halt aid (i ask half halt half halt then ask to stand) he has in past napped (spun and cantered for home) where he just ignored the bit completly, however i wanted to try school him in a snaffle to try get rein aids lighter, however he is just seeming to ignore it and today out hacking he was feeling a bit more forward than usual and when i half halted/asked him to stand he just ploughed straight through and just wasnt listening and it has really worried me, any suggestions on why this is/what to do? as in the school steering is fine and from walk to trot is also fine although i think he listens to my voice/seat more than the rein aid, it is just walk to halt, also out hacking going down a gear i have worries he wouldnt come back to me (although not going to attempt this atm)

I had this problem with my youngster but turned out i was panicing and he heard my breathing change so panicked, now when i hack i just sing to him so he doesnt hear my breathing change and he's really calm and laid back all the time :D

i do this to :) i have sum1 walk out with me if going out alone, i managed to crack the napping at my old yard by tapping his bum when he tried and pushing him forwards, but he isnt yet confident out hacking on his own at the new yard yet

it just feels so out of control it knocks my confidence, but at 5 i dont want to just school him as it isnt his favourtie thing to do!

didnt know if a change of bit may help? if so any suggestions? as he does do it sometimes in school so knows the aid, just ignores it so dont think it is (at least fully) a schooling issue?

Have you got an instructor you trust that can help you get the basics established in the school before you think of going out? If not, find one! Imperative that you are in control + happy. Report back! X
