i have been looking for something to step up to from my 14.3hh connie x - something i can carry on doing RC with and aim for low level eventing with.

i dont have a huge budget - up to about 3k. ive been to see a lot of horses, and nothing as yet that suits, ive also found a lot about the 16hh mark i feel overhorsed on. im really confident on my current wee lad, and been out winning hunter trials, sj, & xc. but i wont jump something i dont know over anything very big....

i saw this mare advertised

just turned 9 years old - so at the max upper age limit i was considering. expolo pony that has been hunting and doing xc. 16hh

i went to see her and found she looked a wee bit different now to that pic

i wasnt even sure i would try her tbh, but when i saw her move - in what has to be said were less than ideal conditions, i decided i wanted to get on.. she was the single most easiest thing i have sat on. size wise she felt ideal, i was very cautious given we were on mud, but i watched the seller jump a decent fence and was v impressed. her flat work will need A LOT of input though... and she is pretty poor looking...

obv if i bought her id get a full vetting and bloods done. but she is a long way away from me so i cant go and visit again. i have done a bit of digging and the local ponyclub know of her so im pretty sure its genuine...

here is a wee vid clip, what do you think? she is advertised at 2k....

I'm a big fan of ex-polo ponies. They are usually pretty unflappable and most jump well.

The only problem is that polo aids are quite different to our more usual aids and they should be very sensitive to weight aids. If she had had a period of reschooling after her polo days I would say go for her although you are very unlikely to have a potential dressage star.

They have let her go to pot a bit. Although she isn't too bad and it is winter. Is it a dealer selling her? She needs building up and some top line developed back. If you have her vetted and you know a bit about her background etc, she may welll be a good buy. She might get a bit friskier when she starts to build up again tho. She does look lovely in the first pic so I would give her some serious thought.

There is something very appealing about her. And she looks like she has a smashin attitude.

She's something that I'd be very happy to own.

thank you -

yes, she seems to check out via local pony club DC having seen her out hunting and knowing the seller.

i can cope with something a little sharp as long as its not too strong for me and she stops on a dime. lol - those are my main requirements, brakes and doesnt rear. believe you me, ive tried horses more than double her price that didnt fit either! i know her dressage will prob never set the hills alight.,.. but as long as she will do a decent enough test to enable me to play about at intro/PN thats fine.

I think she is a lovely little mare and looks to have have plenty of potential to jump PN.

i wouldn't kick her out of my stable!

Go for it, she looks lovely and is as cheap as chips!
I have had an ex-polo pony, he was the most bombproof horse I have ever had. He was perfect to do in every way, had lovely manners and the sweetest temprement. His flat work did come good - the trick was to keep your hands as still as possible!

You seem smitten already to be honest! I like the look of her, and the nice steady way she canters around. And you look comfy, not overhorsed at all. I like her with a bit more weight on, and a better neck, but this you can work on. One thing though, do get the vet to really look at her hocks etc, as the ex polo ponies I know have had a lot of wear on their hocks with all that sharp turning etc. Personally I'd got for it! Goo luck.

polo ponies are great! although dressage will never be there strong point, but can be worked on so don't lost hope!
I think she is lovely, yes poor condition, but polo ponies are never great in the winter unless huge amounts of grass... plus if the her field are like the one in the vid. very little grass so not really suprised by her condition.
Nice jump in her!

oh dear.... ok, i have my heart set on her. but the horse world is a small world. a few phone calls, friend of a friend etc and i am in contact with someone who also viewed this horse and had her vetted. amazing isnt it? im at the other end of the country!

anyway, apparently they didnt buy her as their vet said she had a heart murmour and a sacriollic problem in a hind.

would i be mad to still consider getting a vet out to see her?

Many horses have a murmer, depends on the grade. And I thought that the sacroiliac was in the back......

Anyway get your vet to have a look see and go from there.

yes, my fault sorry, i understand its from the hip area on that side

She looks lovely. I wouldnt be worried about the heart murmur... get her vetted though with a vet you trust, and mention your concerns re. possible hind leg lameness...

thank you, yep - ive arranged my own vetting as something is not ringing true somewhere. the vet that was meant to have been used has never heard of this horse and says they are also too far away and wouldnt have gone out there anyway... fingers crossed. thank you for all the comments.
