Hi everyone, after some advice and thoughts on current situation.
I own two ponies, a shetland and a section A and am about to purchase a 16hh mare. I can afford to keep all 3 but time is limited. The shetland will not be going anywhere however the Section A could really do with more time and one to one.
I couldn't sell her at all so have come to the conclusion that loaning may be the best option for her and me.
Here's the problem. Bramble is only 3 (four next April) despite her age she is exceptional, super in traffic and on and off the leadrein, both in the menage and out on hacks. She was broken (dislike using that term) this year and has never put a foot wrong, she will happily walk, trot and canter, I also imagine she'd happily pop a small jump with a little rider with no concerns (she jumps when freeschooled but never jumped with a rider as I feel she's too young). She hasn't done alot simply the basics due to her age.
I can say hand on heart that she is just a lovely little person who adores everyone. She can be handled by the smallest children, easy to catch, with the farrier, to stable and has never been seen to kick or have any disagreements with others out in the field. (We put the newcomers out with her as we know she'll be nice to them). She is snaffle mouthed and pulls up almost instantly from walk, trot or canter.
However she's only 3 (won't advertise till she's 4) and I feel that it's very unlikely parents would be willing to loan such a young pony for fear of her not being able to be trusted with their children. I have had my 8year old cousin who knows very little about riding - just basics on her and left them in the menage trotting around before now.
Can anyone advise me as to whether I will find a loan home and how I should go about it? All potential homes would be vetted, and the amount of work they wish to do with her thought about to as I don't want her to be hammered around at 4 years!
Any advice appreciated, thanks!
Also, would any of you trust a four year old with your children/grandchildren/younger siblings?

From my experience with ponies is if they're handled well and correctly from the start they can prove to act far beyond their years when it comes to them being ridden.

At 4 years old they can be shown under saddle which gives them lots of confidence. There are lots of ponies at this age on the show circuit.

THe main priority for you would be to find the right family. Perhaps a small child on the lead rein currently but next year would be considering coming off the lead rein? That way said pony settles in, doesn't get worked too hard and the child and pony learn together :)

not sure about loaning but I am finding with selling, I have a very safe but green 5yr old 13.2 for sale and parents seem to be really put off by his age!!! Parents seem to often not want to consider something under 7!!!

^This! Totally agree. From what you say he sounds like he would make a perfect lead rein then onto 1st ridden pony! A friend of mine has a little mare that was like this and she has taught all of her kids to ride! She was only 4 or 5 when they got her i think.

Hope you find a nice home for him! He sounds ace! :)

Are you familiar with your local pony club? Might be worth ringing the secretary or the DC and having a chat. They might well know a good PC family on the look out for a nice pony. Good luck - he sounds great.

i think it will depend if you find a super horsey mum! my parents bought me a 4yo when i was 7 he was a nutter but we grew up together have a fab relationship, when i first got him i fell off nearly everytime we went in a field but i loved it..i did have an older person ride him a couple of times as he took his bucking bronco act a bit too seriously and in open countryside mum worried he would run off!! I think the right person would love to loan your pony it may jst take time to find them but also as your kids ride the pony then that will help, and loaning is probably preferential as they will think they can give back if pony becomes too much

I have a 4 year old miniature horse who was broken by my daughter, just doing things on lead rein, he hacks out, (has also hacked with my son wen he was 18 months has done jumping and gymkhana this year and my daughter who is also 4 is now riding off lead rein and having a play on him which is now teaching him to steer off lead rein, if he i ever in any doubt he will just stop, he is a star really they have grown together, we are now looking for an old pony who can teach my daughter more, however, Magic still has my 10 month old baby to teach in a few months time!!!

HI, i was looking for a pony for my daughter this year ( iahve found one) and hes 6 it took me ages to decide as i was worried about his age but im sooo glad i went for him as he is perfect at everthing and has taughter my little girl so much. The lady understood and was reall understanding she let my daughter ride him loads before i made a decison and let me take him to ashow. You should put the wording in your advert please dont let her age put you off she is an absolute star in all ways, im willing you to possibly trial at my yard first to out your mind at ease. I would say you need a knowlegdle mummy or daddy. I teach and work with horses myself so knew id be able to help with any greenness. Good Luck.:)

My OH had a pony as a child straight off the mountains as a 2yrold, they as kids broke him in and rode him. He hacked, hunted, jumped, won every type of class they tried him in showing and jumping, cousins learnt to ride on him, won on him, pony raced him, taught him side saddle even! Brilliant little pony, buckets loads of charactor and everybody loves him. we've had him back on the farm for the last couple of years and cannot find anyone interested in having him on loan! We feel really sorry for him as he has got so much to give and is just wasted in the field! Not really an answer to your questions sorry just hiope you have more luck than we have!!
