Last night we had to have my mums dog PTS.

She was a Papillion, she was attacked by a poodle a few hundred yards from her home. Both dogs were on leads, however the poodle was on an extender leader, that was not restrained to prevent the attack. The poodle simply appeared from nowhere and launched on my mothers dog shaking her and throwing her in the air, the injuries the papillion sustained were horrific :(

My mother is an old lady, she is in terrible shock. I need some advice, (maybe just a place to "talk") as I am so worried about my mum. Should I report the attack to police/RSPCA.? the poodle owners have been very good & paid the vet bill and they are also shocked it happened, but this poodle surely, at the very least needs to be kept muzzled in public & not allowed to go on an extender lead?

My mother will never get another dog after this, and the horror of the incident will haunt her forever.

I am so sorry for your mum and her dog, it is horrific for your pet to die in an accident let alone in circumstances like this.

My advice is to report it to the Police next time it could be a child.

A colleague's dog was attacked in a park by three other dogs working as a pack, her dog ended up seriously wounded with a huge vets bill. She reported this to the Police, the dogs had a history of attacking other dogs and the Police actually took the owner to court. My colleague did not want to be a witness but made herself do it for her dog. The owner was convicted so it can be worth while taking action, although I appreciate your mother may not want to go to court and relive it.

I would report, this isnt just a little tussle of miscommunication between two playing dogs, this was a fast and fatal attack.

If it was a standard breed then they are fairly big dogs, and could do alot of damage to not only another dog but to anyone that got in the way.

That's a very sad story, this happened to my friends mum and dog but the dog recovered after the attack, she is a cairn terrier and was attacked by some sort of boxer/pit, owner was nowhere to be seen, her mum was hurt in the incident as well, I'm not sure who they reported it to, police, warden etc, nothing was done though as they couldnt' confirm who the owner was, it was outside a block of flats so could have been anyones. My dog is on a extendable lead but I don't walk down the road with it extended she is on a short lead to heal. Yes this dog should be muzzled

Well what would happen if it had been a bull terrier? Would you even ask? No,thought not.Report it to the Dog Warden and the Police, the little sod needs dealing with, how horrible for your mum.

I am so sorry to hear that, your poor mother.
I would report it to the dog warden and take his/her advice on what to do next. I am not a fan of the sue society but if your mum wanted another dog they should buy her one, or give her the value of one as she may decide in the future to get another, its not a good time to make a decision whether or not to ever have another.

This is horrendous your poor mum and her little dog. This needs reporting the sooner the better to the police, dog warden etc. I hate extendable leads for this very reason and have never used them.

EK If it had been a Staffie,GSD,Dobe or Rottie we all know what would have happened. In my opinion a lot of the general public think dogs like Poodles, Labs dont need much in the way of training and they are just as capable as doing damage as any other dog.

Big hugs to your Mum and RIP little dog .

I would report it to police , dog warden , RSPCA and anyone else you can think of just so it is out there if something else happens concerning the poodle . I wouldn't expect anything to come of it though . A few months ago in my village an old lady in her seventies was walking her dog on lead ( a lakeland / fox terrier cross lookey likey and about that size) when a rott ( and please note I'm not anti rotts just anti twonks who let any dog run riot without a thought drifting through their empty head) came round the corner off lead ,knock the lady over and then savaged her dog ripping out his throat . This rott is a known aggressive dog and has been previously been reported . The lady had to have her only family member put down and contacted the police ,RSPCA(who for a change were helpful) and the dog warden but nothing could be done as it was dog on dog aggression . The owner was visited by all the above but that was all . He did pay the vets bill but that doesn't help the old lady who now has no one in the world as she has no family and wonders whether she could have done more to help her dog . RIP Scruffy.:(

How absolutely awful :(

I can fully understand your mum may not want to report it to the Police, they'll want a statement and she'll have to go through it all again BUT you don't know if this dog has done something similar in the past. If we all just let things like this go, we're not considering the next unlucky person it could happen to.

If you do nothing and it happens to someone else, you'll never forgive yourself :(

I hope your mum soon feels better

It is horrific that these things happen. Knowing a PC who also has dogs the police are VERY unlikely to do anything about dog-dog fights, which is a shame. The dog warden/RSPCA may be a better option.

If this is true I am sorry for your mum and dog, however, a newbie suddenly appearing and has all the "ingredients" of a good troll story, old lady in shock, dog attack, shall I report it??
Come on, most dog owners would be out for blood if that happened to any of their dogs, certainly would not have to go on a public forum to ask advice, you just go and get it sorted surely????
Call me cynical but something doesn't ring true?

LOL says you with a grand old post tally of 24!!!

Maybe they are both in shock,..... not everyone would know the relevant authorities to get in contact with.

I agree wth Lexie, sometimes when you need answers you turn to the internet.

it did cross my mind about op being a troll but I am prepared to give them the benefit of doubt because if true its horrendous and also people shouting troll alert could be very upsetting to the op. So I stand by my first answer.

As a relative newbie I am shocked in two ways. Firstly that anyone would come on and give some kind of story like this that isn't true and secondly that the cynics suggest it isn't - not sure who is worse.

Ok, I am going to have faith that this is a true request for advice. Police will not be interested in dog on dog aggression, even in a public place. Report it certainly - and you should - but don't be surprised if they do nothing at all. The only way is to insist that they visit the owner more because of the shock value and the potential health problems caused to the old lady than the death of her dog.

Dog Warden yes you can try....but again suspect it will reap no benefits. RSPCA waste of time.

I would go to the press - your local paper and get them to write an article on it naming the owner of the dog - you must know who they are if they paid the vet bill. If you go public then it will be shaming them into doing something about the dog and will serve as a warning to others in your locality.

many thanks for all your concerns i have reported it too the dog warden this afternoon, unbeknown to me the vet who dealt with her has been in contact with mum's partner this afternoon, I think she is encouraging them to take steps too. Thanks for everyones sincern concerns, one less beautiful dog in the world tonight :( sleep tight Tilly x
