I have a 15hh coloured cob gelding and since owning him his never stood that still when tied up outside a stable. Since moving to a yard where the stable are all in a barn american barn style I've not been able to tie him up in there!

When tied up in there he will spin round crush you up the stable wall, rear paw the ground, break loose and run off. I've got to the point where I tie him out the front and he is a star but this cannot always be the way, when it rains or is dark I will have to tie him inside but cannot due to his naughty ness!!!

Am looking for idea's really on how I can go about sorting this problem out? It makes no differance if there are other horses in or not , haynet he doesn't care about etc...

Help please guys.

cross tie him (to 2 points, 1 on each side), this usually works really well.
if he breaks loose, try 3 totally different lengths of twine all holding 1 ring (old bit ring is ideal), tie his rope to the ring. if he breaks 1 or 2, the other piece(s) will still hold him. this cured 1 of mine of pulling back and running off...
hope those ideas help!

My pony used to be exactly the same, she was such a fidget and would not stand nicely when tied, fatten you against the wall, she would paw at the ground, try and un-tie herself and would rear if you walked away from her.

She has improved a lot since she has been in regular work but she still does have the occasional bit of impatientness like this last week

She's miles better then what she was though.

What do you do when your horse mis-behaves? Do you ignore it or make a big thing of it? I try and ignore Millie as much as possible when she is being impatient and then give her lots of praise/attention when she is standing quietly.

Have you tried cross tying him? That should help as he won't be able to move as much. Does he stand nicely if another horse is tied up close by?

i think a little discipline is in order here. tie for short periods whilst doing things, and pat him up. gradually increasing time. tell him sharply and tap/smack him when he is trying it on! etc til he will stand on his own. or do what the horsemen do and chain him to a telegraph pole and leave him there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! til he learns or breaks his neck. i would do it a little longer each day and double your string you ti him to so not quite such an easy battle to win. does he tie up in his stable?

Thanks for the idea's.

Horse_Crazy I try to ignore him when he does it altho this makes him worse ( thats when he will break free and run away ), but then if I go near him he will strike out at me or just spin round and pin me up the wall or nudge me out the way!! His no differant having a horse tied next to him!

The way my barn is it would be hard to cross tie him unless I used lunge lines as the barn aisle is really wide
( barn looks really bare was taken not long after stables were built )

Ofcourseyoucan. Nope doesn't tie up in his stable either! To handle in hand and do anything with tied up outside he is a dream! You only have to use your voice and say over and he will move over etc... so he is well mannered just not in this respect. Lightly tapping/smacking him does nothing he ignores it!

i would teach him to tie up in stable first, then if h dos break free he has no where to go. double up the string!! if he strikes at you i think that deserves a simarly aggressive smack back. i would use a stick so not to hurt your hand. one or two hard (i mean hard) and he will think twice the next time. give him an inch and he willk take a mile. you are the dinner lady and he needs to respect you and your space!

Thank you Ofcourseyoucan. I didn't want to say incase I got jumped on but I have held a short stick before and have smacked him hard and he acts like you never hit him its so annoying! He just doesn't care!!! I think it stems from at a old owners he was never tied up ever and if he wanted to walk away they would let him!

I've worked through a few problems with him since having him and all thats left now is the tying up and the not being able to stable him without him kicking the door down , cantering around the box and rearing! Its so frustrating some times!

Anyone want a coloured pony lol?
