Affiliating with loan horse?

Just wondering if anyone has done this? I don't envision giving my loan horse back anytime soon (her owners and I have had the discussion around me buying her at some point, but will definitely be keeping her for another few years!) and would like to affiliate her for dressage so I can earn points and win leagues (wishful thinking!) and prizes etc, and also for myself to have registered results for future.

Anyone done this and any advice on affiliating dressage in general? I'm currently getting 65-67% in affiliated prelim classes on a day ticket so I guess that's not bad? My horse gets 7s and 8s for her paces and 6s for submission which we're working on :)

Yep, I do & have done this. Only issue is that the legal owner of the horse has to be a member of BD

Sounds like you are getting good scores :) Have fun!

That is what the rules say, but BD let me do it, because horse was on long term loan. I was expecting owner to need to register. Was a few years ago.

BD shouldn't have too much of an issue with you being down as the 'owner'. I ride my mum's horse and had the discussion with BD and they were happy for Topaz to be in my name despite the passport etc, however mum deceided she wanted her name there as owner.

same here, one of mine's from a charity and I'm down as the owner, but better to mention it and check your own circumstances in each individual's case. i believe the rules are there for the insurance element of the membership :)

Thanks everyone, I have a valid loan agreement and she is on long term loan to me (have had her nearly two years now). I also pay all her insurance costs and everything else that goes with it!

I will speak to them and see if it's alright for me to be registered as her owner as it would be easier :)

Also a quick one - how many unaffiliated comps would you do before making the decision to affiliate? I've done about 7 or 8 in the last year (most of it concentrated into the last few months!) plus a number of ODEs (unaffiliated), all with 63%+ scores

As you're already getting nice scores unregistered at BD comps then I'd just go for it. I didn't do any unaffiliated with the horse I'm competing now, just went straight to BD as I knew she'd have a nice experience for her first shows :) If you are happy then just crack on!
