i've had this conversation with two farmers now, and they both think it's going to be similar to last year  Skidding around, deicing, breaking troughs, and driving along the lanes......

Any encouragement welcome ;) sm x

I am bracing for impact as we speak! Think it'll be just as bad.

But think of it this way - at least it can't get any worse!

Well, you obviously survived the last one, so I'm sure you'll manage again!!
I'm sure I can't be the only one, but I love the winter! For this winter I will be buying more salt in advance (everywhere ran out!), other than that I'm good to go! Nice rambo rugs, my girl grows a wonderful wooly coat, ym sorts out hay, lots of logs in for our fire, all good!

it could last for an extra month tho.......I'm investing in one of those car heaters to try and help with deicing, got my thermals washed, hubs says i have just gone a bit bonkers getting ready for it. Then I bet it'll just be mild and wet (which is far worse).

I adored the snow and frosts, it was just getting to and from the yard that was VERY dodgy :D And ilike the routine of mucking out too. I must be certifiable.

Noooooooooooooooooo i'm still clinging to summer, autumn is trying to drag me away kicking and screaming but i'm not having it!

I hope it's not as bad as last year. What a miserable time that was. I have been looking at getting some grippy things that go around your shoes to stop you slipping though, that would be good. I'm sure it will snow again. But we had it for nearly 3 solid months and i don't know if i can deal with that again :(

You've just reminded me of my favourite shop conversation ever:
Me - ''Have you got any salt, please?''
Shop assistant - ''No, we've sold out out, but this cat litter works just as well...''
Me - ''WHAT? For seasoning soup?!!''
:D
It was a classic.
I think this winter will be cold, and probably fairly long. It feels like home, with proper seasons :)

lol, that's fab!!

After last winter this year will be :

BLISS :D , heated rug rooms, solarium, WARM water to wash off with :D well managed fields .......yup winter will be easy this year ESP as I now do not have to drive 30 mins in the snow along roads like this as I can walk;

Sheet ice under the thin snow!!! YUK

In all seriousness though I think we will have more snow this year :( blackberries are out already and the coats are turning .....instinct knows best and the beasts are fluffing up early this year :(

martlin that is BRILLIANT!!

The way the horses are pushing coat through I must admit I'm wondering what they know that we don't... I quite like the whole snow routine etc, but like others don't like travelling to and from the yard.

I don't mind the travelling, after all it's whole 20 yards :)
I also seem to be the only person in my locality who a) knows how to drive in snow/ice and b) possesses a set of snow chains...
No doubt this year I will again be on pulling out of ditches duty - can't wait.

those road pics look very familiar.........my driving did get better after three months, and the landy did do really well looking after me, but there were so many casulties along the way, including a school bus and a normal bus. They just will not pay for gritting on most of the main roads, let alone the ones I have to use !

Well my YO has spent the last 3 days putting a roof over one of the stable yards so we have a warm dry space to groom and get ready and is roofing the round pen this month as well so must be something up!

Shys Mum I also enjoyed the weather last year I like the whole Blanket, thick bed, thermal underwear then home to a fire and hot cup of tea milarky.

Heads off to find straight jacket

At one point i had more grit than our local council last year sm, and i only had a carrier bag full. There wasn't enough. They started bringing in sand off beaches etc. Hope they've been stock pilling this year. I think i will too. YO wouldn't grit last year, so i might be stocking up on cat litter.

I've heard that it is going to be a wet and windy winter (as opposed to the cold/snowy winter last year).

There is nothing we can do about it. I realised that my horses beds were getting drenched, not because they were in more, but because having cleared them out for the summer, then having a storm, I realised they are leaking through the damproof at the bottom of the stables, resulting in puddles! Cue rubber mat buying spree!

I have also invested in snuggy hood turnout hoods for them for the fields, as I am fed up with rubbed manes and muddy heads and bellies.

HA HA HA. We had over 4ft of snow fall in a week and alot more either side of that week. We embraced temps of -32 in the night and -20 in the day. And yes I rode in it. Can't wait for the winter to come again, it was BRILLIANT.

it's a blessing to have the landy, traded in my tiny fiesta at Carplan. It's almost bankrupt us, as it's needed £600 in exhausts and servicing this year, plus the loan  but it's just so good for dogs and horse stuff. And ice and snow !!!

Sophie loved it ;

We were warned snow late this month and itsgoing to be here until april. I dont mind it though. I lovethesnow. We started learning how to ski last year. There is still a patch of snow on the Cairngorms that they are still skiing on have been all year round.

We have a old suzuki vitara that we use to drive us up and down the mile private road to our house. I want to make a snow plough for it so we can always get home!!!haha

I'm going to have a far easier winter cos I no longer have my two big horses, just littlies now. No more manhandling duvet sized rugs :D

I have stocked up on some hay n straw and will get as prepared as possible.

I actually like the winter though, there's somthing very cosy about snuggling up in front of the telly when the horses are all settled in their stables dry and comfortable. My ponies will be in as needed this winter whereas last year they wintered out.

Very much hoping my little project pony will have found a new home by the time winter kicks in. He lives out and I cant cope with the guilt of turning back out into the cold and rain! ;) I loooooove tucking my boy up nice and cosy in his stable with a big bed and his rug on :) However he is out on loan at the moment so there will be none of that for me this winter :(

Must admit part of me feels relieved at the prospect of a horse - free winter!!! Although my yard where the project pony is has lovely fields and a lovely big indoor school, so it wouldnt be too horrendous to be there :)

Nahh, I think it was a one off. We've not had a winter like that for years. We' re forecast snow this month but I imagine it'll only be a flurry - just hope it doesn't clash with the last BE of the season @ Wee Burgie! lol, never had a BE event "snowed" off. Oh god, I shouldn't have said that should I!!

I CANT WAIT :D :D
Should hopefully be moved into the new place in next couple of weeks, need to sort out a canopy on the stables and i want to re plaster the walls and paint and then let the snow begin :)
I loved driving in it last year, going sideway down hills was rather exhilirating :D geting stuck up the farm because my car couldnt get back up the hill was a bit pooh but it did mean no work :D:D:p
New house in middle of nowhere with ponies at home for company...couldnt get much better :)

here is a pic of myself in my field at home on the 31st of March this year! notice my horse is Not in the field , shes in her stable happily munching hay ! ( thank goodness i keep my horse at home !) i could not imagine having to travel to a horse is this sort of weather !
