yes, always buy photos if they're good, and as a memento of the day. if the day's gone brilliantly and the photos are okay, i'll buy them, if the day's been pants and the photos are rubbish, i won't!
don't mind whether it's at the event or later, although tbh, looking back, i've been rubbish about ordering them online later. it's nice to have them there and then to come home with, really. or, proofs through the post and then order, that's how i've got the majority of mine.
average price used to be about £7-£8, not sure if prices have gone up in the last 3 yrs!
i prefer seeing them printed out than having to queue for an hour or so (yes, honestly) to see them on a p.c. browsing them all while waiting for scores to go up at BE whiles away the time...
type of photo - don't mind as long as it's crystal clear! umm, for dressage, head-on down centre line is a fave, or side-on in canter, or head-on in lateral work. sj - have a brilliant close-up side-on shot of horse's head and neck and my top half, in black and white, midair, still prob the best ever photo i've had. so, i'd say either side on or from landing side, in mid-air or as landing.
xc - at a decent fence, preferably a nice spread or big drop, or something that'll look impressive in the photo. mid-air or landing are my faves, the few take-off shots i have aren't that good.
hope that helps a bit!

**Do you tend to buy a photo at an event?
good day/good photos yes

**Reason why you buy one - do you always get one, or to mark a good day or an achievement?
as above or to mark acheivement eg headshot with rosettes or stood with rosette

**What is the average price you pay for a photo?
gawwd depends on size- normal phot size the £4 i think they are quite expensive really.

**Do you prefer to see your photo displayed there and then, ie on a PC and then printed, or do you take the website details and wait until the photos go up and then order?
order because i can never make my mind up which i prefer...

**What sort of photo do you buy/like the look of more?
Dressage divas- SHOWING, side on or front on? Trot or halt? headshot? Particular movement?
SIDE trot or canter or stood square with rosette
SJers- side on or front? Landing, Take off or mid air? Canter shot? Head shot? Particular fence?
side on/ front
Eventing Queens- side on or front? Take off, M A or landing? Particular fence? Gallop shot? Head shot?
love water fence pics and gallop shots also a meaty xc where she is jumping it gooooood

**Do you tend to buy a photo at an event?

- Yes, a lot of the time, unless she's been a cow bag and it's a day to forget!

**Reason why you buy one - do you always get one, or to mark a good day or an achievement?

- Nice to have a collection, memories...habit!

**What is the average price you pay for a photo?

- Too much! £12 - 18 normally

**Do you prefer to see your photo displayed there and then, ie on a PC and then printed, or do you take the website details and wait until the photos go up and then order?

- I love to see pics on the day...but tend to get over excited and buy more than I would if I was sat at home on my PC!

**What sort of photo do you buy/like the look of more?

Eventing Queens- side on or front? Take off, M A or landing? Particular fence? Gallop shot? Head shot?

- Always looks good to have a pic over a decent fence! Usually side on, mid air. I have got the occasional take off or landing pic, but a nice tidy mid air pic is my favourite. Never buy galloping pics/head shots.

**Do you tend to buy a photo at an event?

Yes sometimes

**Reason why you buy one - do you always get one, or to mark a good day or an achievement?

Good day or good photo

**What is the average price you pay for a photo?

£10

**Do you prefer to see your photo displayed there and then, ie on a PC and then printed, or do you take the website details and wait until the photos go up and then order?

At show and on website

**What sort of photo do you buy/like the look of more?
Dressage divas, side on or front on? Trot or halt? headshot? Particular movement?

Side on, trot

SJers- side on or front? Landing, Take off or mid air? Canter shot? Head shot? Particular fence?

Side on, mid air, prefer pics over oxers to uprights

Eventing Queens- side on or front? Take off, M A or landing? Particular fence? Gallop shot? Head shot?

Side on or front on, mid air or landing, over a decent fence

**Do you tend to buy a photo at an event?
yep! but depends on what event it is and how big the fence was and if the pic is good!

**Reason why you buy one - do you always get one, or to mark a good day or an achievement?
because a pic tells the story of a 1000 words! and cos i like to see how we have improved!

**What is the average price you pay for a photo?
£8

**Do you prefer to see your photo displayed there and then, ie on a PC and then printed, or do you take the website details and wait until the photos go up and then order?
dont really mind, usually the quaility is better when off the internet!

**What sort of photo do you buy/like the look of more??

I like fences side on, but dont really have a preference - the one in my siggy of my arse is the only one of its kind that i have but i like the colours! usually the jump is mid air but i have to get some more take off and landing ones

I used to buy one of darling child and pony nearly every time out, but have now run out of wall space and am more selective. I rarely buy one of myself but then I don't get out much these days!

Only buy now if v good shot, or different, or on new beast. Problem with some xc events is that non-horsey photographer stands by easiest jump with best light close to the start, because she/he then gets lots of good quality pics of virtually everyone competing. But I would prefer pic of the biggest jump!

Have stopped buying xc shots at most of our local venues because it's inevitably the same jump. Nearly always buy at a new venue as nice memento. Water jumps always fab, drop fences, anything taken from slightly lower ground to emphasise height of jump and skill of child/pony!

Buy more on the day, lovely to come home with it in your hands to show OH, family etc. but have also bought days (months even!) later on line if queue too big or out of cash.

I will be more likely to buy if around £10 mark, but some have been charging £12-£14 for average size, which is just enough to make me think twice and not buy unless particularly good.

For sj, generally prefer side on, with all four legs off the ground (amazing how many photographers snap while back legs are still on floor). Also like front on, but like to see size of jump, not just the head of horse and child.

Rarely get a landing shot in sj, oxers best for that moment of suspension, but a colourful upright is eye-catching.

I have never bought a candid shot or just plain cantering shot, nice to look at but always think I could do that myself.

Took some photos once with a friend at a mounted games competition and sold them, to raise funds for the PC, and found the youngest class sold best, hardly any in older age groups bought one. Guess they have so many by then!

Are you or friend thinking of starting up photo business?

**Do you tend to buy a photo at an event?

Yes if we have won something special or if there is a realy good photo of him.

**Reason why you buy one - do you always get one, or to mark a good day or an achievement?
winning something special, or there is a particularly good photo of my lad

**What is the average price you pay for a photo?
£12 max for an unframed print.

**Do you prefer to see your photo displayed there and then, ie on a PC and then printed, or do you take the website details and wait until the photos go up and then order?
I prefer it when the photographer prints little proofs and puts them on a board so you can look for the ones you want then see them bigger on the pc before printing them.
I also like them to be available on line for a good few months after the show as im terribly forgetful

**What sort of photo do you buy/like the look of more?
Showing for me. Any side on shot of the pony going particularly well in trot or canter that makes him look good.
A good gallop photo
headshot with rosettes,
standing square with sash or lots of rosettes.

If im jumping then either take off or half way over a jump (just before you start tipping downwards.

If ive got kids at the show and there is a realy cute candid one of them and thier ponies then yes im likely to buy that as well

ONE thing i realy want to say is that it is the most annoying thing ever when youve won something like a supreme championship and the photographer doesnt have a single photo of it. Its happened a few times to me and i think its a silly thing for photographers to do, I'll always buy a photograph of a championship or supreme even if it isnt the best photo.

Thank you for your thought in your reply. My BF is already a pro BMX/MB photographer but is increasingly interested in the equestrian photography (am not pushing him honest!) As theres such a wide ranging competitor group on here seemed to make sense asking!

**Do you tend to buy a photo at an event? Sometimes. I couldnt afford to buy one at every event!

**Reason why you buy one - do you always get one, or to mark a good day or an achievement? I only get one if I especially like it, but it has to be a combination of things, ie. the horse looks good and so does the fence (if its XC etc.). OR if its really dodgy like an almost-falling-off one! I would always buy one if it was a super special event like Championships or something, or if it was a particularily impressive XC fence.

**What is the average price you pay for a photo? I usually buy mine through the internet, the main photographer in my area charges £10 and emails it to me.

**Do you prefer to see your photo displayed there and then, ie on a PC and then printed, or do you take the website details and wait until the photos go up and then order? I like to see them on a website ASAP after the event.

**What sort of photo do you buy/like the look of more?
Dressage divas, side on or front on? Trot or halt? headshot? Particular movement? - Sideways usually in trot. Depends though!

SJers- side on or front? Landing, Take off or mid air? Canter shot? Head shot? Particular fence? - Usually taking off makes the best fences when they're nice and stretched out. Although sometimes in mid-air and just about to land can be nice. Spreads are probably the nicest for horses shape. I do like ones of me just cantering along too.

Eventing Queens- side on or front? Take off, M A or landing? Particular fence? Gallop shot? Head shot? - Side on or at a slight angle. Take off or mid-air best IMO. Ideally the biggest or scariest fence on the course!

Other events- what sort of images? Quick portraits at fun shows? Candid shots? Arty images? Dont think Ive had many non-competition type ones... Although its nice to see behind the scenes shots like horse drinking or being patted etc.

I buy a photo if we are going well in it and the photo is well composed (i.e. not with some fat course builder standing in the background).

£10 ish.

I prefer looking at the pictures on the website and having the hi-res version emailed to me as I usually want to touch up the picture (airbrush out any spectators or other horses, I have even "repaired" a broken jump wing). This year I will start taking a memory stick to shows and see if they will let me take the picture away there and then.

Dressage - don't mind the angle, but prefer the picture to be in portrait.

SJ/XC. I like a selection of t/o, ma & landing pictures. Too many photographers just do the t/o and it gets a bit samey. Good quality cameras will take a series of pictures in rapid succesion for 1 button click, so photographers should do that. I would be interested in buying composite pictures of all 5 stages (approach, t/o, ma, land, exit) to help me with training.

I only buy pics if they are of a fence which looks BIG - I know all photographers stick to the easiest fence on the course coz you're guaranteed to get a good shot of most people, and light etc plays a part, but I hate the fact that so many are on the easiest fence on the course. If it's shared with the PN course I generally don't want it thanks! I want things I can look at that make me go WOW. So I very rarely buy one - have been eventing for 2 seasons and own three shots from eventing and one from BSJA.

I bought 2 from my first HT on him as I knew I'd want to look back on them. Would prob get one if I ever qualified for anything too!

Want to see them then and there AND have a website as I dither on the day and like to look back 'in cold blood' as it were.

Apart from that, I have no preference. I have three side on mid air shots and one from the front of me landing over a hedge. The big/scary looking fence is my biggest bug-bear.

Thank you. Interesting to hear about you retouching it at home, actually a good idea if you possess that sort of skill on the PC!
Yep, its nice when you can have a selection from a fence to chose from, some horses look better MA, some TO..I think a sequence of shots as a single photo or perhaps on a panoramic photo would be popular.
My signature is from some rapid shot experimentation.

Another eventer POV, thank you! Can assume that good events to go to would be ones that have further qualifiers then.:)
Can never understand when the photographer doesnt try to get the wow factor jump in.

Well, if I ever managed to do anything spectacular like qualify for a Novice Regional Final, or do said NRF or manage to get to the British Champs I would be so shocked I would buy every pic going to remind me that I did not dream it as it would be unlikely to happen again! So all the RF events would be good ones I reckon!!

All the BE schedules are on the website, and anything which is running a regional final section will have it listed, so IRF = intro regional final, PNRF = PN regional final etc etc. They also have various series, such as the Landrover Champs in the SW etc. When it says 'schedule available' next to the event then it has been finalised, when it says 'in prep' they may change the classes.

The event calender is easiest to get to from the drop down box in the top left of the front page. Also you WILL need to ask the event organisers for BE as some have long standing relationships with pro companies who get v unhappy if someone invades their 'patch'.

Feel free to ask if you want anything explaining!

O wow, thank you, I feel a spate of printing and highlighting coming on! At the moment this is all just valuable feedback, no intention of stepping on others toes. He wants to do everything 'right' as this would be a business venture.
Of course, I think a few BE photos would look good in an online portfolio...
Whoo Stilemans and Tweseldown are soon, and are running Intermediates so plenty of beefy fences.
Will there be a difference between OI and IN?
Ps. you are now my eventing guru...sorry!

A lot of riders buy photographs to record their progression over time, not just for something nice to hang on the wall.
