She isn't the only person recommending full supplementation of a balance / vits & minerals to all horses. Clare the scottish nutritionist is very open about her belief that all horses need supplementing as grass / hay is insufficient - and she is very qualified.
I have friends who haven't fed their retired horses anything outside grass and hay for years without ill effect. Would any deficiency be more obvious if the horses were in work? Possibly. But I also know someone who hunts their horses off grass and haylage and they have cracking feet and tonnes of energy. Given where she lives I would suspect the grass isn't 100% balanced but the horses seem to be managing just fine. Would a blood test show otherwise? Maybe.
