Hey all,

So woke up at 7 am to take Jim 4 a ride round the woods and a canter on the softning ground with all the lovely rain we had last night and are still having. Got him in went off and took him to a pretty busy road. I keep forgetting that Jim is not as experienced as he would make you think as he is such a saint. Stood by the road and a dustbin lorry came passed which scared him but he didnt do anything and I gave up on my idea to cross the road as it was too busy (Jim is not Dougal who was a saint in traffic and I must remember this). So turned round and Jim was good and we wandered back down the track and I was going to take him up another track. but he saw a scary log on the floor and spooked. I was hanging off the side and it was frieking him out, so I decided to disembark and landed on a tree stump on my back in a HUGE amount of pain. It has been said to me before that I have gripping ability which is true, but can get you in trouble. I think in the last 10 years of riding I have fallen off 7 times and I never fell of Dougal. But Jim is very small and I just didnt have much to hang onto. Any way I caught him, and he was so sorry, but I told him it was all my fault. He actually stayed by my side but got the rein over his foot so I had to help him out. Aww he is so cute and he didn't mean it at all.

Anyway, to cut a long story short I phoned my parents (the one time I was glad to live at home die to having no money to move out) and my dad came and got Jim and Mum brought the car round . Took my 15 mins to get in the car with my Father shouting at me saying I needed to grow up and me feeling sick due to the pain. My Father is a Doctor with, clearly, amazing bedside manner!!!!! anyway got home, Father bringing Jim and Mother helped me out the car and into the house. I got to my room and fainted on and off for 15 mins due to pain, again was nearly sick a couple of times and I am now lieing in bed drugged to the eyeballs with a very sore back.

I am just so annoyed at myself for asking too much of Jim too soon. I have been riding for 22 years and am just annoyed I made such a stupid mistake. Jim is so sweet and I was just being silly asking him to cross that road at 7 30 in the morning when its busy.!!! Grrr. anyway now I am having to take a day off work as I cant stand up, I have suspected broken ribs and an exceedingly painful back and I cant ride for the next few days. Ugh so annoyed ay myself. At poor Jim is now in the stable and I want to go and see him to tell him it is ok and it wasnt his fault.

Anyway sorry to let you all know but I am bored and have v little to do, and wish I was at work were I have stacks of paper work to be getting on with!!! think I will have to venture down there later and pick it up to do in bed.

ouch.

Glad you're OK (ish).

We all do things that perhaps weren't the best thought out but hindsight is such a wonderful thing.

Hopefully you'll be back on your feet in a few days.

Thanks all, I dont think I need to go to A and E, I am sure its not that bad and I dont want to waste anyones time. if back hurts like this still by tonight then I will. I can walk and stand up and feel all my toes and there is nothing you can do for broken ribs. and yes hindsight is a wonderful thing!!! lol! will keep you updated though if it gets worse. :)

Er, well actually broken ribs can puncture lungs and kill you...so I would recommend getting checked out. I fractured ribs when I was younger, they scraped my insides and I still struggle to breath deeply when I'm running or out of breath.

And if you've damaged your spinal column then you could end up not walking. The fact that you've been lucky and walked away now DOESNT mean you've not damaged yourself.

A&E. Now.

I did ask Dad this, coz I was worried I might have a broken back but he has looked it over lots and pressed etc, and mum has too and she is a trained occupational theropist. But we are going to call the doctor out. I would have to get an ambulance out if I need to go yo A and E as I cant get in a car properly for long journeys.

Please go an get yourself checked out. Friend of mine had a horrific team chasing fall earlier in the year. But walked around for a week afterwards, admittedly in pain but able to move everything. When she finally got checked out she had a broken ankle and several cracked vertabrae and was incredibly lucky not to have been paralised for life during the week she carried on as normal as all it would have taken would have been a gentle knock, slip or trip.

It's not brave not to go!!! Any back problems should be checked out, regardless of whether or not you can wiggle your tos. If something is cracked but not displaced you could do a lot more damage without realising.

ETA friend was checked over by doctor at the team chase and pronounced okay. You can't feel cracks, they only show on x-rays/scans!

Please go to A & E if its suspected ribs, having broken 4 myself late last year, 2 of them in 2 places causing my lung to collapse you need to be seen. i know they cant do anything for them, but really lying down is not the best thing for broken ribs and if youve flailed them and it goes undectected you could end up with serious problems.

hope you make a full recovery though and jim isnt too terrified xx

And this sort of fall is why I always wear a body protector! I hope you feel better soon and it's nothing to serious, I would highly recomend investing in a body protector and wearing it every time you put your hat on :)

i would have had an ambulance out straight away! thats what they are there for!! good luck!!

dont worry i will be wearing mine every time from now on, silly thing was i nearly put it on this am but then just forgot!. were waiting on the doc now for a referral as Dad says that will be quicker once in A and E

ok doctor rang, he is a rider himself and thinks i probs havnt broken my back but i going to give me diptophlenac (sp) for pain and then x ray later today once pain gone down if it does. if it doesnt ambulance must be called asap!! how does that sound? he says as jim was walking and i fell on a big flat stump it probs not broken but you never know!! personally I want to go to A and E but I do feel ok when i lie down and so if he can get pain better to get me in a car then i feel this would be good.

dont be so concerned of time wasting calling an ambulance, it will fast track you into a&e and like i said thats what they are there for, your as bad as my nan! she got a cab into a&e last week after falling and breaking her arm and shes 80!! she didnt want to trouble anyone! you need to be having an x-ray, if you have a fracture that becomes unstable... well im sure you know the problems that occur with spinal injurys!

i really would be very very worried if a doctor told me he "didnt think" my back was broken!!!!
Please go to hospital ??? xxx

Especially if it was diagnosed over the phone!

Diclofenac is an anti-inflammatory painkiller, and probably will help the pain - but it won't fix any broken bones/internal bleeding. Go.

I would certainly get something checked out if it was causing that much pain. A friend of mine had an accident any years ago - thought she was fine and it wasn't for a while (few weeks I think) when she got some aching in her neck. She had it checked out and turned out she had fractured a vertebrae in her neck! Now she was fine but, can you imagine if she'd taken another knock or fall in the time after that? That could have been it for her!
