hey all.

im really thinking about buying a NF from the sales in september/october:D:D. i know its a long way off but...
please can you share some stories and piccies of your NF, whether they're off the forest or not. dont mind NFx.
what do you do with your NF, and what height is he/she?

it'll be really helpful and if you have been to the sales, please say!

cant wait to see your pics and stories!

thanks!:D

Chaz-not registered but came from road Beaulieu sales as a yearling. Out of a graded sire and unregistered dam (could only ever be registered PB because of this) Has really been round the houses, bought him in 2005 when he was 7 and he had already had 7 owners! Very talented though...

& two chestnut fillies from the sales last year. Holly & Tinkerbell. Holly is Full, Tinkerbell is PB (again dam is unregistered). Holly very inquisitive and a quick learner, Tinkerbell is greedy and very nervous

Tinkerbell...

May show Holly next year-she's expected to make 13.2hh.
Tinkerbell has too much white but very cute-expected to make 12.2hh

Sorry for poor photos, they are in winter woolies big style atm!

Can't upload a pic but i have a 13.2 nf x warmblood. original owner bought her from the sales as a foal.

She has done a bit of everything. They are a great breed and can turn their hoof to anything.

I have been to the sales myself a few times in the past but not for a while. If they are straight off the forest they will be unhandled. Occasionally people will put ponies through the sales that are handled, sometimes even broken.

Hope that helps.

Ps sorry just bugs me but a newfie is shortened name for a breed of dog, a new forest pony is a forester

Skye. 14 yrs old, forest bred, and ran on the forest as a stallion for a year before being gelded and sold.

Oliver PB, not forest bred, bought at BR, untouched when we got him.
Now nearly 3 and a lovely boy.

Stanley, full bred, again bought at BR born on the forest, and as calm you like from day 1.

my YM bought 2 colts straight off the forest, they were only 4 months old and are now 3. one has been passed to me to start, and the other is being left another 6 months as he's not mature enough to be started. they were hoping they would make a reasonable height, but the bigger of them is only 12.2 :( so they will be broken in and eventually sold on.

i've been to the sales quite a few times, make sure u get there early as the sale ring can get pretty packed. if u don't take your own transport, there are lots of people there who will be happy to help arrange it. most of the foals are untouched, though a few are halter broken (usually the auctioneer says if they have had anything done with them). colts can be bought for as little as about £10-£12, fillies tend to go for more for obvious reasons :) if u got any questions i'd be happy to try and answer, and i expect lots of others on here go often too :D

thank you catwithclaws

i was thinking of buying a just weaned colt. how long did your YMs ponies to be caught/halter broken? did she start them in a stable together? and did she buy 2 because she wanted them to keep each other company or because of rules of buying and transporting etc... any advice would be great!

They were wild..totally and utterly..and still are as we don't get to spend as much time with them as we'd like!

Started them in a stable-generally if you get them in an enclosed space they feel more secure. In our field shelter we can catch them, groom them, pick out their feet and lead them around. Outside, no chance!

Got two for company, although will probably sell the smaller one next year.

You asked for it :D She's 5 years old, due to be backed this year and she is registered and was born on the forest. She came to Scotland as a foal and when I got her - at 3yrs old - she had a headcollar on and so I've taught her to lead, pick out feet etc.
She was really spooky and flighty at first and although she can still be the same, a lot of her confidence is starting to show. She is very sharp but such a sweetie. Click your fingers or pat your knee and she trots over.

She loves to go out walks in hand to the point, she will plant if she hasn't been out for long enough. She's 14.1hh

This is Sprite, he's forest bred but unregistered. I got him last year, he had a headcollar on but was pretty much untouched. He's 2yrs old and currently stands about 13.1 at the withers and 13.3 at the bum. The vet thinks he'll make about 14.2/3.
Hairy in his winter coat...he isn't as fat as he looks!

Last summer, over the winter he has developed a neck and other 'bits'

it took her a couple of weeks to get them halter broken, and she did them in a stable together to begin with, believe me you're unlikely to get near them out in a field to begin with lol. didn't take long for them to trust her, well they quickly realised she was the bringer of food!;) she went to buy just one, but her and her hubby went off to get a drink, came back and her daughter was like 'oh i just bought another one!' so they came back with 2 :D

they stayed together until just a couple of weeks ago, which isn't something i'd recommend, as they were completely inseparable - in the end we had to go cold turkey and turn them out with different company on opposite ends of the yard!!

hope this helps xx

Thankyou :o I was attracted to his colour when I first saw him. I'm hoping to do some in-hand shows with him this year after that I'm not sure, he was originally meant for the children but he's quite sharp and they're a bit wary of him and have decided he's mummys so I'm happy. I'll probably do a bit of everything with him.:)

Sorry yes, they're Foresters! Calling them "Newfies" does tend to bug those of us that have them LOL!

This is Ollie who I've had since he was 4 (he's 15 now) He was Forest bred and is my pony of a lifetime - he'll turn his hoof to anything and is such a smashing character, soft and gentle like a big dog. :p

agree..Forester not Newfie, sounds better as well. Warmblood NF x for me as well, 15.1 lovely lovely chap. Also a Reg NF 14.1 pony, he is 21 now has been a bombproof hack for me, done preliminary tests, taken my daughter to PC camp until she was 16. PC commissioner described him as the most genuine honest pony she knew at one stage! They can be cheeky as ponys are but I love them

He's a young grey! Greys are born a different colour as you can see in the first pic, then grey out, he will get lighter the older he gets.

 oops! i knew they greyed out but not from 'blue roan' as i thought it was. you learn something new everyday..... :D

The first pic is actually the later pic :) The hairy pic is from this year the other from last year. I've had some people say he's a blue roan others that he's an iron grey, his passport says roan, I'm just waiting to see :D

This is my girl - she will be 3 next month. Currently standing at 13.3hh at the wither and about 14.1hh at the bum. She is a NFx - mother was a coloured crossbreed called One Eye (because she had one eye!) and father was any one of three stallions in the area, but the breeder doesn't know which one. She went through Beaulieu Road sales, but no idea who got her then, and I got her in November last year after she had already passed through a few hands. She is adorable - a bit too people friendly - to the point where if I am taking her for a walk in hand on the lanes and there are some walkers, she almost drags me over to see them - she thinks everyone wants to pet her. She is bolshy - still has no respect for the stable door or the field gateway and will barge past you or horses, but is getting better slowly. Strangely once the headcollar is on she is good as gold! She has lovely little black spots just on the white coronet area over her hooves which looks really cool. I have totally fallen for this little horse and I know that if I was looking for another pony I would definitely get a NFx.

Haha, apologies, so did I mistake mud for another colour? One of mine is grey, he still has a big splurge of bay on the inside of his leg, his passport says Rose grey but TBH he whites out the older he gets, not much Rose about him now. Whatever colour yours is a lovely boy

This is Jazmyn, she's Forest bred and I got her when she was 8 months old, 2 days after she came off the Forest. She's 10 now and I've been showing her since she was 2, we do some local shows, some county shows and she's been to Ponies UK 5 times :)

My old first pony, B. He's been owned by the same person since a foal, but loaned out to various pony clubs/hunts/riding schools. He is a super pony- everyone recognised him out hacking and he knew his job. Now going on about 23 (he was 20ish in this pic) he's been diagnosed with cushings as we'd expected, so on medication, and is still hacked out about 3/4 times a week with a new adoring loanee!

He was my first stepping stone after coming out of a riding school- has always been 100% a gem to ride, but it took me about three months to master tacking him up!! The little wotsit knew every trick in the book and had a good laugh walking all over our toes to start with...

Lol...yup he's grey/blue and mud in the first pic.:D

This is my gorgeous forester, he is registered and was a forest run stallion, though I did not get him from the sales. He is 9 and I have had him for nearly 5 years and we have tried most things, dressage, sponsored rides, show jumping, affiliated showing, le trec, hacking holiday, handy pony, gymkhana. He a fab riding club pony, very friendly nature, though he can be quite opinioned at times. My pony is around 13.2. He likes living out he does not like being stabled and he is boss of the field! He has a stallion son out on the forest called Portmore Thundercloud so if you like my pony then perhaps you might like his grandchildren, the catalogue will list the sires of many of the ponies.
