Aloe Vera Juice

Strange, mine doesn't have those dose rates on it, in fact I don't think it has any. I got the 25ml off another supplier. It's always worked for me.

Have been having a read up about Aloe Vera juice. Someone has said not to feed it if horse is on meds as it can stop the uptake of meds. My mare is not on any meds but is on Equinox supplement just the original one and she looks very well on it and also a 10ml dose of Aviform Glucosmine. Would the Aloe Vera stop the uptake of these to supplements? Thanks

I've seen no evidence of that in horses, and I think it may be just rumour. I don't think it coats things like sucralfate, I think it works a different way. It's a very watery liquid, you could almost believe it was just water. It's also apparently only needed 3 times a week, though I prefer to feed it every day. I feed it with minerals, salt, yeast and MSM and have fed it with devils claw and can't see any change.

Thank you for your reassurance YCBM. I have just sent for a 500mil bottle to try her. I think I had better introduce it slowly as she may object to the full amount straight off. I have noticed her being a bit girthy when I tack up but she is fine to ride in every other way and is in very good condition. She is fine when we tighten up in the school and also when we were trialling saddles out the other day she took no notice each time the girth was done up, its just in the yard in the mornings, she throws her head about and makes a fuss, once girth done up she fine again. Fine to groom as well. Many thanks for your help on this subject.

I had similar with my PRE mare, who is a highly strung type. She was just reacting to the girth tightening in the stable, nothing else. I had the aloe left from a previous ulcery horse so I've been giving it to her and the reaction has stopped completely. I will try to wean her off it when it runs out, but she is a stressy breed and if she needs to stay on it, she can. Pearlsasinger has also had a mare who needed it permanently, I don't think it's unusual.
.

Well I will let you know how it goes when it arrives, hope it stops the faces at girth time. She is not stressy but is very bossy but in a funny way, she is not nasty at all. Cant wait for it to arrive now. Do you think your mare was in pain or do you think it was just her - interesting that it stopped when you gave it to her.

I had only recently bought her. She was 7 years old and had never been ridden. I brought her home to a totally different life and she's a highly strung breed. I'd be very surprised if she wasn't showing the start of ulcers. If aloe hadn't worked I would have treated her for ulcers with omeprazole and sucralfate.

ah I see, different scenario altogether then. Glad it worked for you. I dont know much about PRE's as never had one but they certainly look lovely when I have seen them about at the dressage competitions we go to. I will let you know how we get on with the Aloe, many thanks for your help.

So day 2 on aloe Vera 30ml a day as that's the closest measure I have to 25ml. It's literally the least girthy I have ever known him to be. Could be coincidence so I shall see if it continues.
And anything that doesn't make his mallanders worse is a win at the moment anyway

Aloe Vera Juice is fed to the horse and is supposed to help boost the immune system. Aloe Vera Gel is applied topically. Effective in both cases. Are you sure your cob does not have mites? I have once had this and two vets misdiagnosed it for mud fever. Different vet, Dectomax and hey presto all gone.

He's been jabbed following a recent flare up and they have improved significantly. The aloe is more to help with him being ulcery but if it has any benefit for the mallanders it's a bonus

I'm only dubious as its very quick for a significant change if it is the aloe, however nothing else has changed. Either way its a good thing so I'll go with it.
I have a set of measuring "cups" that I don't use for anything so I used the 30ml one of those, its convenient and for the sake of 5ml it will do for now

Gold Label Wondergel, £8.00 from Viovet for Mallenders. It got rid of it with two applications on a cob with full feathers. Admittedly I caught it early before the skin itself got broken and he has not got mites at the moment.
