Alsations/GSD appreciation thread

What follows is aimed at no one in particular and is based on my love for the breed with which I was born and raised and which I have spent almost three decades living with, training, handling, judging and loving.
It is also prompted by debates about a programme which I didn't watch much of, but have heard a lot about.

As we appreciate this wonderful breed, can we all also appreciate that they are not in short supply and we are not going to run out of them any time soon - the only way to improve the breed and to stop overpopulation of rescues and the heartache caused by HD, epilepsy, haemophilia and other genetic defects is to only breed from animals proven to be sound in mind and body and which are tested, scored and monitored to the hilt.
Unless you're 100% confident of this, don't breed - and bear in mind, it still might go wrong, despite all your best efforts.

A lot of mistakes have been made in the past through ignorance and just plain greed and we all have a duty as GSD lovers to put those mistakes right.

OK, there's my rant for the day, bring on more piccys!

As much as I loved jessies pups, she should never have had them. Fred was nice but not exceptional and we had no idear what her background or breeding was.
When we found out she was in pup, older brother and I begged our mother to get an abort & spay done but she wouldnt cough up the cash and at 11 an 16 we had no way of getting it so we had he pups.
On the plus side,our dogs were all homed to close friends and family who did get them done so they never bred and am happy to report that none had health problems untill old age set in.
The first died just before her 14th birthday and the last died 6 month ago aged 15 and a half.
My mother still insists they were fine because fred and Jess were good dogs shere bloody good luck IMO!
 
I can see them fine too. Nijinsky, looking at your first pic of Xara and Evie as she is now , they are so alike I looked at Xaras breeding again. They are actually quite similarly bred, particularly on Evie's bitch line.

Gallop on, I love your sable lad, what is his breeding?
 
My boy isn't a proper GSD, he was a rescue but we reckon he's GSD x Doberman... what do you think?
He's almost all GSD looking except the curly tail and ears!! He also has a more upright back end and doesn't slope off as much as a pure GSD, although when he was Xrayed for somthing the vet said he doesn't have great hips, but at approx 8yrs old it doesn't seem to be a problem... yet!

Bit hard to tell from those pics, but GSD x Dobe sounds possible. Mind you just because he has "soft" ears doesn't mean he is not a pure GSD, believe me they happen in the breed. I had one in a litter, he was a beautiful dogs but his ears just never went up, and everyone thought he was a crossbreed

His owners loved him to bits but I gave them most of their money back cos he didn't exactly meet the breed standard.
 
MM I'm not up on dog breeding lines (horses yes - dogs no), all our dogs have only ever been pets, we've never been into showing/breeding/etc.

It was only with our last dog Max that we were more educated, did a lot of obedience work, unfortunately before him I would say we were extremely ignorant and although mum & dad always had shepherds, again, they were ever only pets.

I must have another look at Xara's pedigree too. All I can remember is the Shotaan part!! PM me Evie's pedigree so I can have a nosey. Not that it will mean an awful lot to me but it would be nice to see the similarities. Evie's a cutie.

Ludo - those puppy pics seem very familiar - who's the breeder? I tend to know the breeders more than the dog lines

he's terrified of everything though he does look scary when you take him out, he sometimes barks with excitiement when he's out on walks, other dog walkers think he's an uncontrollable beast and fear for their dogs though he would drop to the floor pooing his pants if they went near him haha awwwwww, he's just a happy little soul
 
I love his hairy ears... just soooo cute!

When our Rotti and GSD X are with us no more I think the guard dog of choice to replace them will have to be a pure GSD.

My OH loves his rottie but her breath stinks of cow poo and she slobbers loads... she is such a pig she eats cow pats constantly when we are out for walks!! Its a shame cos she's such a softie and loves cuddles but she makes me want to heave when she pants at me or burps in my face!!
My GSD X is a lot more polite and doesn't belch so much, even if he is a bit hairier!
 
Nijinsky, pup is coming from Kazaura GSDs in Daventry. Mum is Kazaura Xia Summer Blossom and dad is Astana Bono at Reyanheath. Reyanheath is where our previous GSDs came from.

Ludo, I know the Reyanheath kennels well. Their top dog Schifo is closely related to Buffy and Evie. Have not seen the young dog (Bono) in the flesh but like the look of him from his pictures. Loads of luck with your puppy, you'll have even more pics to put up here soon.

How were your dogs from Reyanheath bred?
 
Yeh I have been on your forum and saw Ann and one or two others I knew posted quite regularly. Not been there for a while though, keep getting sucked back into HHO

And our old girl who passed away in March (pics of her in my thread above - she's the one not enjoying her bath) came from Astana via some good friends in Northern Ireland.

MurphysMinder- we are hoping to visit Bono soon, and have been goin to see puppy every weekend since he was born !! Bit keen I know, but the house has been bit quiet since we lost Bodie. Did put some pics of him up after the pup ones. His 'proper' name was Reyanheath Yasko - from Reyanheath Purdita and Ashbury Laios. We also had Zara - Reyanheath Vareena who was Reyanheath Roxy and Reyanheath Solo. Fantastic dogs.

Nijinsky, if you go to www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd and type in Ole v fichtenschlag in the search box, that is Evies dad. You can then do the same again for her mum Mirrwood Witchy Woo. Its a good site for tracing pedigrees, you will find Xaras parents on their as well. Some of the older UK lines aren't on there but most of the German ones are going back quite a way.
