Hi all, I have always used a half lined saddle cloth under my Wow as I have been told the air pockets can create some friction and having spoken to a Lemieux rep some time ago he suggested horses like the sheepskin as it allows some movement of the pad against their skin so again avoiding any friction. However, I am slowly coming to the end of my tether with sheepskin/wool saddle cloths. I find them really high maintenance (aside the fact that they are normally boring colours too!) and I also struggle finding them with proper swan necks to get them into the gullet. The cost is also huge for a decent one. I have been looking at memory foam pads but had heard memory foam gets very hot (there was a v enlightening thread on here about memory foam mattresses!) so I am looking to you guys for alternatives! Or am I doomed to a life of dead sheep on my pads?! TIA xx

Mattes have a ton of lovely colours which change every so often too, and can be brushed in between washes, so not too bad in terms of washing, no hair conditioner rubbish either, just use their detergent, or a good leather wash. If you just use a half pad most of the time then you've not got to worry about the cotton flaps getting crusty, but I do tend to recommend a half lined numnah as you use.

Most foams are hot and don't absorb that much shock, Thinline is probably the exception, worth looking at, but they won't give that little bit of movement that it seems you're looking for. Sheepskin is the best thing for that.

Can you not use a separate sheepskin pad underneath a normal saddlepad..? Then you can get all kinds of colours.

As far as pads go, I use the thinline ultra and have found it makes a difference to both me and the horse, but it definitely won't give you movement. Quite the opposite actually!

I just use an ordinary numnah under my Wow and it's fine, no friction at all. A few of us on our yard have Wows and none of us uses anything special under them. I think that might be a myth about the friction.

I agree, I don't know anyone with a WOW that uses anything special, I have another brand with air and I don't use or need anything either.

Same here. I use a normal lemieux with my wow, stays put well and horses are happy.

Thanks for the replies everyone - maybe I've been over thinking / over worrying about something that's not really an issue! You've all been very helpful xx

how about a prolite pad with a normal cotton numnah - then you can have your colour choice with numnah and the prolite under it on the horse's back?
