Hi Everyone!

I recently bought my first horse since I was a teenager (yay!) and I have inherited a feeding regime that I would like to tweak slightly if possible.

He is a very chilled out 17 year old gelding standing at 15.2hh. Currently he is fed the following:

2 cups of TopSpec Senior Balancer
1 cup of Speedibeet
2 cups of TopSpec Turbo

I'm planning on phasing the TopSpec Turbo out gradually, given that he was competing on a weekly basis with his last owner and has come to me for a quieter life.

Mr problem is that the TopSpec Senior is pretty expensive (upwards of £40 for 20kgs) and I wondered if there was a cheaper alternative?

I like that fact that it has a joint supplement. My boy doesn't have an issue with his joints at the moment, but I feel prevention is better than cure. Is there any other balancer with a joint supplement available at a cheaper price? Or perhaps is there a joint supplement I could feed seperately alongside something else which would work out cheaper?

There is no need to worry about fizzing up, but he can turn into a fatty in winter.

Any help would be much appreciated, I've only ever fed straights in the past!

Thanks!

Something like Pro Balance (Ebay) and micronised linseed? Decent mineral levels (balancers) aren't cheap I'm afraid.

I would too be interested to know a decent alternative as I have never been able to find anything with the same levels of vits and mins. Tbh as it's only two tiny scoops a day I would stick with it as it's pretty cost effective. My cob is on a much cheaper Bailey's balancer which I like but as you have to feed more it works out at a pretty similar cost to the Topspec.

Hi Everyone

Thanks for the replies and the tip on the Spillers balancer - the difference is £5, and every little helps! I might try and move him onto that. :)

You should be able to compare the levels of things in it eg glucosamine, biotin etc by looking at manufacturer websites. You sometimes find that different products contain much more or less than others, despite the price variations and marketing suggesting otherwise!

I gave my oldie the senior balancer :) decently priced and found it good for him. he however being a fussy sod decided not to eat it  halfway through the 4th bag.

I gave it to the youngster to get rid of it and she loved it :D
