Trigger is on the maximum dose of this at the minute (1.3 kg/day), as he needs to put on quite a bit of condition. So far he has been on it for three weeks, and we have seen some improvement.

He has had a worm count done, and he needed doing, so he has now been wormed, which will hopefully help; we are also starting to work him properly, so he will build up muscle and topline that way.

I have just bought the second bag of Outshine, I am hoping that this is all he will need. However, if it comes to needing more after this one is finished, what cheaper alternatives can people recommend.

So far I have seen:

Dodson and Horrell Build and Glow (got samples at Burghley) 15mj/kg at about £25/bag to be fed at 500 - 1000g per day.

Rowan and Barbury Sumo 24mj/kg about £25 for a 10kg bag to be fed at about 300g per day

Badmintons Triple Top Up 14.5 mj/kg about £25 for 20kg bag - think fed about 600g per day.

I am also aware there is micronised linseed etc.

Any comments on any of the recommendations above - looking at that it would seem perhaps the Sumo possibly best option; however the man on Badminton's stand at Burghley was most informative, and said his should work in a couple of weeks.

To be honest I prefer feeding old fashioned oil! I find outshine ridiculously expensive for what it is.
I get the same results feeding alfa a oil, conditioning cubes and pink powder as a balancer. If anything extra is required it usually in the form of dr green - grass nuts!

I have tried feeding just oil - didnt really make any difference really. He has only really started to put any weight on since on the outshine.

I've never fed it so can't comment but there are also: Saracen Equijewel and Falcon Omega Rice which may be similar products?

They also make the outshine in smaller bags too which may keep the costs down.

Mine are on Linseed Oil and Pink Powder which may be useful to you if you didn't want to keep on the outshine.

Something like Topline cubes/Alfalfa oil may also be cost effective as well.

Equijewel is also good, but less MJ/kg and about the same price from memory. You'd have to feed a shed load of oil to come close to that much Outshine and then you'd need a VitE/selenium supplement as well so prob wouldn't be any cheaper.

When i was trying to put condition on my boy I had him on TopSpec super conditioning flakes, full ration of TopSpec balancer, Outshine, sugar beet, Alfa-A Oil - 3 meals a day.

When we need to put condition and shine on without heating we use Saracen show improver mix which has always worked and then add equijewel if need to.

We feed full fat soya, speedibeet, alfa a oil and baileys stud balancer.

that works brilliantly for condition when they're working hard and is very low starch. Full fat soya is about 19% oil, so much the same as outshine but at a fraction of the cost. Protein level is slightly higher in the soya, but if you're working him then its fine.

To be honest I prefer feeding old fashioned oil! I find outshine ridiculously expensive for what it is.

you have to feed about 2 pints of oil to make the same difference as 1kg of outshine, equijewel or full fat soya. and feeding that much oil runs a risk of coating the gut, restricting nutrient absorption and causing diarrhoea

I'm a fan of micronised linseed (Charnwood milling, 20.5 Mj/kg, £23.52/25 kg). I also use Alfalfa and speedibeet.
