OK - one of the first rants of the New Year.

Yesterday lunchtime my newish neighbours left a message to say they would be having a few fireworks at midnight. Resigning ourselves to a night in OH and I grumbled to ourselves but opted to go out and check the neddies at midnight. Left the lights on for them so they didn't fall too deeply into the land of nod and get woken up with a shock

My neighbour's bungalow is set into my land so their small garden is about 30 ft from my stable block and they have vehiclar access to their house across my drive, so you're getting the picture - it's all pretty close and compact here.

At midnight they let off some whopping fireworks. By 12.20 I popped my head over the fence and cheerily asked if there were many more as one of the horses was going absolutely ape. Just a couple of minutes more was the answer, so we dug in for a bit longer. By 12.40 OH lost his temper and ended up having an arguement with the lady of the house. TBH, my oldies weren't too bothered, but the ex-racer was going insane, sweated up, kicking his box out, weaving like a giddy, etc.

I smoothed things over with her partner, but TBH, I'm not best happy. These were HUGE fireworks and 40 minutes worth, about 30 ft from the stable. My son was also woken up by them.

Now, the poser - am I miserable old mare begrudging people a good time, or would you have been slightly peeved in my position?

Happy New Year Everyone

I would have been furious. Could probably have forgiven half a dozen small fireworks, but to go on for over 40mins not on (especially when they had been informed that the horses were being upset).

Edited to add - Dangerous and unreasonable (doesn't sound like there is sufficient room for large fireworks which normally required everyone is kept a safe distance away of 15mtrs). If people want to see large fireworks, they should go to a organised display.

I'd have been pissed about it - but would have resigned myself to the fact that it is their land (I assume) and that they had very right to have the fireworks. Being selfish and ignorant is (unfortunately) still not illegal!

At least they told you in advance so that you were aware and could make arrangements to check.

Thank you guys - that makes me feel better

I agree with you MM, 'tis not illegal, just ****dy antisocial and inconsiderate.

I think I'm a wee bit off them at the moment - they've totally chewed my drive up over the last few months (am about to get the title deeds out and check what covenants we put in when we sold them the house), have built a huge extension with massive picture windows 8 ft away from the fence overlooking my paddock which makes me feel very self conscious about being on my own land. I feel a big strong hedge of horrible conifers coming on here!

On the other hand, we all need to get on as neighbours - I don't really want to have disputes with anyone. I suppose some people find the smell, etc of horses anti-social. However, they chose to buy a house set in the middle of my horse paddocks!

If she annoys me too much I may start riding at 7.00 am in the morning. That will make my old neddies shriek at the top of their voices non-stop for their missing companion

I suppose I'm bit protective about the ex-racer as well. He's a loan horse and we nearly lost him last Christmas to cellulitis. The last thing I need is an injury or colic 'cos he's got in a hissy fit.

Flippin people - I think I'd rather live in a nice isolated place with a huge fence round it

Yes it is important to try and get on with your neighbours, but being a good neighbour cuts both ways. Their action last night showed a complete lack of consideration for you and your horses, not the actions of a good neighbour.

Have you thought about getting a Cockrel!!!!! Suggest you put the hen house a close to their bedroom window as possible. LOL

I wonder if I'll get an apology or do you think I shouldn't hold my breath?

I suppose I'd better get my ass outside and muck out. Couldn't face it this morning after big feet had been mixing it up all night in his frenzy and my old lady will be asking to come in soon 'cos its raining. Fortunately the old ones were quite chilled (probably couldn't hear them so well).

I doubt it, people like that rarely think they have done anything wrong. At an old yard I once had the neighbour setting the fireworks off in the direction for my stable block, so the fireworks were exploding right above the stable roofs.

They were requested (Bleep machine was in overdrive!!!!!) to point then in the direction of the empty field instead - thoughtless arseh*les

*sigh* I guess you're right.

Hubby was picking up spent rockets from the field this morning and apparently you could hear debris clattering on our conservatory roof.

No you are not being miserable!!IMO I think the total sale of fireworks should be banned and only licensed displays allowed(now I really am being a miserable mare about it!!)And would be ranting

(wouldn't have just been the fireworks colouring the air!!!!) if the debris was falling on parts of my home!It doesn't take much to start a fire really !!

This happened to us two years ago and it was pandemonium. Display standard fireworks right outside the stables. If you can get the police to cooperate, it's a £5000 fine for causing unnecessary suffering (is any suffering necessary?) to animals. You could have shown them the results of their inconsiderate behaviour and if they had carried on, it would have been proved to be deliberate. I think they are all b*****ds.

Funnily, next doors (we are rural, and they are townies) got a horse and though it didn't work out in the end (wonder why?!) they had awful trouble with it on Nov 5th - Ha Ha - even though the nearest fireworks were fields away. They never apologised to me though

At least your neighbours let you know - ours had some that went on for nearly an hour. Luckily I didn't go out last night so I was able to race down to the stable and put the horses out in the field before they kicked the box down!

Bl**dy fuming!!!....I would say let them off for 10 mins to bring in New Year.........I know they warned you, however, you did not expect a full Firework display on your door step.....I wish they banned the things completely....and I thought they were meant to be made not so loud now....they seem more noisy than ever.....they seem to have come part of any celebration be it Weddings,Birthdays you name it and let the fireworks roll....I'm with you on that one...not on!!!

Last summer our local "rural development group" (whatever that is) had a 40 min professional standard display about 1/2 a mile away from us (and that was close enough - they went beserk as were out in the field and we didn't even get a warning).
I am afraid I telephoned the NIO (who issue the licwnses here) and complained very strongly.

Hope your horses are all OK today, and not feeling stressed, and that you didn't find any used rockets in your fields.

Fiona

Thanks everyone for your moral support. I feel much better now.

Yes, we did find rockets over the field and the neddies were fine today.

I think 10 mins of standard domestic fireworks would have been ok. It was the 40 mins of professional grade jobbies that really hacked me off.

I don't think the 'lady of the house' is speaking to me now
