Charlie is looking very Ribby at the moment so just need a bit of advise as to weather I am feeding him the right sort of feed.

At the Moment he gets

1 (Stubbs) Scoop of Alfa A Oil
1 Scoop Build Up Mix
1/2 small cup of Quick beet soaked

He gets this twice a day (Morning and Night).

I also give him 2 small cups of Boss and Pink powder daily.

Does this sound about right?

Here is a picture of him

Thanks

I used to use the same feed as you .Last year I switched to top spec com balancer he gets fed less bulk but his weight is fantastic. He is 16 h 7year old tb and weighs 530 t0 540.In the winter they do a fibre feed called conditioning cubes I used them last year when grass was scarce you will get no fizz and plenty of fibre and protien with no cereals.

I would say you are. If you want non-heating then speedibeet/fibrebeet cannot lead you too far astray. HOWEVER, using a product like speedibeet in order to gain condition, should be approached with caution. When made up, it is around 80% water, so you need to be feeding it in large quantities to make a huge difference. Fed in smaller quantities (like I do), is good for filling them up with good fibre which will provide a form of central heating and also slow release energy.

If she needs to gain condition then Alpha A Oil is great for that (my boy won't touch it!). I would also say go for something like spillers conditioning mix as it will put lots of condition on quickly without fizz, and works very quickly.

I feed BOSS which is great for overall condition, but also vegetable oil (no more than a cup a day so as not to blow their minds) in winter.

Plenty of hay or haylage... as much as he will eat.

You don't want to give him too big a feed so 1 scoop Alpha A Oil per feed I would say is OK. Some form of build up cube/conditioning mix etc, is fine. The BOSS like I said will help overall condition, and you are covering the vits and mins. Make sure you are feeding enough, and if you need to add in another small feed, leave haylage in the field etc.

PS. My boy was losing condition/not quite right for going into winter, so I adjusted his food.

He's now getting 2 feeds a day of:
1 scoop Alpha A (wouldn't eat Alpha Oil)
1/2 scoop spillers conditioning cubes
1 scoop speedibeet
1/2 scoop Black Oil Sunflower Seeds
1/4 (soon to be 1/2) cup veg oil
Formula 4 Feet (soon to swap to something different if possible).

His condition is already improving. I am only feeding the cubes to get some weight on him and once I have, I may swap the conditioning cubes for another scoop of Alpha A per feed.

I'd make sure he is getting ad lib good quality haylage, mmake sure he is warm enough.

Also Alpha a oil is fibre so you can give him much more than that. I would give him and extra scoop am and pm. It is very good for weight gain.

My Exracer is on a pure fibre diet and as well as his haylage he gets 5stub scoops of alpha a oil a day split into 3 feeds with a broadspectrum vitamine supplement and he looks fab on it.

I got this feeding plan from a feed nutritionist and it has worked for my boy

Goodluck

Hhhm I would maybe change the actual mix and up the quantities.

I did quite a lot of research into feeds which had the highest energy content. I did most makes/brands except winergy.

The one that came out on top was topspec super conditioning flakes, with 16.5 MJ/kg

And second was Baileys no.4 with 13.5 MJ/kg. I feed my girl this and she is holding her weight well, and it hasn't heated her at all.

My girl is now fed:
1 scoop of Baileys no.4
1 scoop of alpha a oil
1-2 jugs (about 1l jugs) of speedibeet
And I will soon be addding in a few mugs full of barley rings. This is in 2 feeds per day, and all the quantities are being upped the further into winter we go.

Make sure he has access to as much hay (preferably haylage) as possible. I hope he picks up a bit, I know how hard it is!!!

PS- LOVE the heart on his bum

Thanks every one.

He is out in the day on not great grazing so I will probably start putting some Haylage out for him to Munch on. He comes in at night with ad lib haylage. Someday's he will clear the lot and other day's he will hardly touch it.

I was thinking about changing the Build Up Mix to Bailey's No. 4, would this be better?

Also as much as I would like to add more to each feed I already feel like I am feeding him to much at once.

What do Barley Rings do? How are they fed?

Hi I know how you are feeling had problems with my girly trying to get weight on her. She is also a TB.

I have been feeding her
1 scoop BATA horse& pony cool mix
1 scoop alpha A
1/2 scoop BATA pressed barley

She has been on this for about 6 weeks and it is unbelivable the weight she has put on and her condition is so much better.
I have had to adjust her belly straps twice. Best thing is aswell is that it only costs me about £23 for the 3 sacks.

Might be along shot but have you had his teeth checked lately. Also miss looses weight when she is cold???

Good luck and dont worry.x

He had his teeth done last summer so He is due to be done again, I have the EDT coming out in the next couple of weeks.

He is well rugged up as he does feel the cold, at times he has 3 (decent weight) rugs on!!

I am a fan of the Baileys no 4. My old horse is 35 and he was getting ribby and tucked up so I put him on these and he looks great now highly recommend them

Your post would read identical to mine regarding feed and your horse is very similar looks and condition to mine. I am changing from Spillers to Baileys No 4 cos dont think the spillers did anything. I do feed corn oil though rather veg oil and just hay, although am looking to change to haylage as he has as much hay as he wants (and 24/7 access to rather rough grazing). Interesting to hear about Blue Chrlies AlphaOil only diet - might consider this as my boy is only ridden once / twice a week and was worried about feeding him too much concentrate when he wasnt really being worked

Just wanted to add that my boy is not in hard work, and the nutrionalist said to me that because Alpha A oil is fibre (and not a concentrate feed) he can have loads of it.

Hope you have some success, I have heard great things about Calm and Condition and Baileys number 4 but my boy didn't get on very well with these.

Every horse is different so it will be trial and error as to what suits him
