I went down to check and feed my girls when I got home from work at about 7 tonight. The WB/ID is in an old but functioning MW rhino. She had cold ears. The TB is currently only in a light weight and she had cold ears and a very fluffy coat. The WB is quite overweight so I'm happy for her to lose a few pounds, but the TB is at optimum weight right now and wouldn't want her to lose more going into winter.

Last night I put the end of a bag of haylage into their shelter and they've eaten it all. Should that be a hint that they want to be taken in?? It's a month earlier than last year.

I have ordered the TB a Rambo Duo, and I do have warmer rugs to put on her, but I've been holding off as I'd rather keep them clean as spares and wait for the Duo. Is this really mean of me, I can't decide? It's only been about the last 3 days I've been thinking it's a lot colder, and I reckon the new rug will be here in 3/4 days.

Bearing in mind they do have a shelter, should I be feeling guilty, or am I just letting them be horses......

What rugs are yours wearing overnight at the moment?
 
the section c and the fat cob are naked, they are soooo hairy at the mo, the fat cob will be clipped soon and wears a MW mark todd combo, the sec d is in a MW mark todd combo, i rug him well so he doesn't get too hairy!!
 
Mine are still rugless and 'woolying' up nicely

That's a lie actually, the Shetland had her lightweight on today as it was p***ing down and she takes ages to dry as she is really hairy already!

They both are in at night.

Mine are all WBs - Two mares are in lw turnouts and I have only just put them on.

Foalie and Yearling are both naked. And tonight they are the only horses without rugs on my yard - including all the native ponies!

They are designed to be outside FGS!

Old boy in his Chaskit which used to be his thick winter rug for snowy and frosty mornings .... but he never gets hot and I do not want him to lose weight

Selle francais is a ditherer - in a medium weight and will be in at night soon. Welsh x is in her lightweight for the first night tonight but I am trying to woolly her up as she is staying out as long as possible this year (said that last year and she was in end of october - oops)

mine's a native but rugged to keep the bugger clean!! nothing worse than working all day and having to scrape off mud in a hurry for a lesson!!
 
As a TB x NF mine should be a bit hardier than she is really, she is out 24/7 for about another week or so is wearing her mw at night and lw in the day if she needs it. Can't wait til she is in and clipped so much easier!
 
ISH is in a L/W rug but thinking of changing it him to his M/W soon as its getting a lot colder and dont want him to loose weight. Then he can have his H/W when its much colder.
 
TB and TB x were without rugs earlier this week when it wasn't bucketing it down. Tomorrow they'll be in M/W turnouts and at night in the stable they both have fleece cooler type things on. I did shut the window though (they have half doors and a window), but as the glass was rattling in the pane I decided to be kind!
 
My TB has been in a LW for a while, feel very guilty at the moment, took it off as it was lovely weather the other day, didn't put it back on and it has been chucking it down all day.

OK so I guess a few more days/nights in the LW won't do too much harm!

TBH the WB would still be in her lightweight if she hadn't thoroughly trashed it on the fence. And then done the same to her week old Amigo. Hence the fact she's wearing an old one now....

mine have got LW rugs on, but also have the option of going in to their stables aswell. i always feel that if i overug now they wont feel the benefit when it gets really cold.
 
oh dear i think i must be a wimp mine are both tb and have been naked on sunny days, light weight on sunny chilly days and medium light on chiily rainy days, and neither are clipped yet.
 
George is in nothing and will remain in nothing until I clip him (if I clip him!). He's a welsh d. Lanky has his sweet itch rug but will also lose that come mid October and will be naked until clipped. He's a warmblood. No I'm not cruel. Cruel would be inhibiting their natural temperature-control mechanisms by rugging them to the hilt when they don't need it!
 
Rugged mine for the first time tonight, he is TB x cob so hardy, but he's 16 now, and he looked so pleased to have a rug on! Weatherbeeta combo, it's 100g, so not much more than a pac a mac. If the weather improves, it will come off again, I prefer not to rug until clipped really.
 
Blimey, I must be a soft touch. For the last 2 weeks mine is stabled with a MW on and has a LW out in the field (Cob x WB and clipped out)
 
My walking wooly jumper is in her lightweight tonight (no fill) as it's meant to rain and be down to 3 degrees :S

Will stay in this till she comes in I think(a month till then), will be trace clipped soon
 
My hunter is fully clipped and out with a mw on. The tb and pony are both rugless and not cold at all

The tb will remain rugless all winter unless I clip her or something very awful happens with the weather. The pony does have a rain sheet on when it's very wet as he is 42 now

I work on temperatures. Once the temperatures go below -10, I rug up. The horses remain rugged up all during the winter when the temps go down to -20 most days but occasionally -40. In the Spring I start taking the rugs off on the days when it becomes 0.

My horses have no rugs on yet and I don't envisage putting them all on until December at the very earliest. I do, however, feed ad-lib hay all year round, although my guys aren't eating a whole lot of hay right now as they still have tonnes of grass in their fields.

Sparks fully clipped and in Rambo Duo with no extra liner (so 100g fill) during the day and MW at night.

My 2 were in medium weights today as it was chilly and rainy. they get tucked up at night in their nice cozy stable rugs. They are very sensitive you know

Im too soft, mine are rugged all year round! Summer they have fly sheets on, this time of year its lightweight.

Mine are cobs and not clipped, i just treat them like kids!! Tried letting them go a day without a rug but ended up rushing up to them!
 
FGS putting a lightweight rug on when they have a winter coat just flattens their own coat and it cannot work properly. So they are liable to be colder with a lightweight on

I won't put a rug on until clipped and then he comes in at night. At present out and naked and he's an older grey so white mud and all.

. I also wish people would try to make an effort to understand, at least the basics of, horsekeeping. Rugging is a fairly basic thing so how anyone can get it wrong is beyond me.

The whole point of horses growing thick coats is so that when it gets cold, their fur raises and traps the hot air. By placing a silly little lightweight rug on top, it will stop the hairs being able to trap the hot air, and as it has no padding will offer the horse no substitute heat, and therefore the horse will end up being cold. The only time a lightweight can be of use at this time of year, is when you have a horse who hasn't quite grown a furry coat and it is raining outside, as this will keep the coat dry ... however if you have a horse with a good coat on it, it should be fully waterproof and won't need a rug. Clipped horses obviously need rugs to replace heat loss from their lack of hair.

2 cobs, one fully clipped and in a MW Mark Todd TO at night, with neck cover if raining and a rain sheet during the day. The other is not clipped so is naked.
