My WB has a MW Rhino on this morning - it's 7 degrees here with 40 mph winds and a bit of rain so not pleasant. Foal and pony are still naked but they are all in at night.
my filly isn't rugged. she has to live out this year so i can't molly coddle her just yet. i have a middle weight rug waiting to go on end of oct, beginning of nov.
Both my TB's are in MW with necks, one is hunter clipped, other is very fine coated, old boy is in a LW combo and is comfy, these 3 are out 24/7 at the moment, TB/Welsh D is in with no rug on, but has a really wooly coat, she's on 2 weeks box rest...........
Angel is still out and is either naked in the day or has a LW on then depending on the temperature she has her LW or her LW with 70g fill.
She is a section D but a whimp at that!
Mine are all naked, including my TB. Apart from my NF who has a touch of lami and is in, the TB and shettie are out 24/7.
I like to let them to get their winter coat before rugging up though, and keep to the minium rugs possible. Saying that my NF will probably have a rug on when its constantly raining as he is 16 and a bit of a wimp bless him.
Mine are both young, well covered and very hairy hardy types.
I did put on their summer no fill t/os last night, purely as it was wet with a really cold wind and the field offers little natural shelter just to give them a little protection.
To be honest, they would probably have been ok but I felt really cold in the wind.
Pony is currently out in a medium weight in a very exposed field and is cosy, no weight lost or anything. She's 29. She will be getting a little bib clip as she is still ridden and then will get a HW on. She's getting a new one this year
The 2 mares and foals are out 24/7 naked, as are 2 of the 4yo's
My eventer is in L/W stable at night and a L/W T/O by day if it raining or a bit chilly... he is a wimp and gets cold and drops weight easily!
The stallion is in at night tried him in a L/W stable and he was sweating so put a summer sheet on for 1 night when it was really miserable and he is out by day in a L/W T/O if its wet but naked if its dry!
My WB who is very hardy and not clipped yet has just (yesterday) gone into a LW rain sheet because it was raining! Clipped wimpy arab has been in a LW and then went into a borrowed MW last night and will stay in a MW now....he is having a bit of time off in Oct, and after that will be clipped again probably and start coming in at night, and go out during day in either MW or HW!
Hovis is either naked or has a rain sheet on when its bucketing it down. He's just moved into the boys winter field and theres so much grass the little git is stacking on weight. At night he's in but naked. He's the only horse on the yard not wearing PJs at bed time but he hates being hot. He's being clipped next week but even then i'll play it by ear with him. If he's hot he takes his rugs off himself usually with disasterous consequences!
I think people have a tendancy to say "Oh, it's really cold today" and then rush to rug up horses, forgetting that they are meant to be outside in all weathers and that the optimum temp for them to be happy is between 5 and 15 degrees. Also, we live in heated houses and we will obv feel colder when we are out of doors compared to our horses!
Henry is still rugless and will remain so until I clip him next week. Then he'll need the rug as I'll have taken his natural temp control ability away. Gulliver is on box rest right now so I put his stable rug on last night - but that was only because he's 17, is poorly and can't move about to regulate his temperature.
Mine is out 24/7 all year and rugless not clipped NF - feel a bit guilty because of all the rain forecasted over the next few week but determined not to rug him till least end of Oct as I don't like him to be rugged for nearly 24/7 for 6 months of the year as then he does not get an opportunity to roll around and feel the ground on his skin and scratch his itches properly.
Feel a bit mean when it is pouring with rain and windy though!
Debating whether to clip or not at end of Oct so he will then get rugged up.
My boy is in a lw during the day and a fleece at night. The YO has instructions to keep the fleece on under the lw if it's really cold. Soon enough he'll go in his MW. If their ears are cold why not put a fleece on under their rugs?
My TB has had a lw on overnight for the past 2 weeks - yesterday was the first time he's had it on through the day. Sisters pony has just started having a lw on overnight but mainly to stop him growing too much coat as she only really hacks at weekends during winter so we might not bother clipping him this year. Sec c is still rugless and will be all winter as she grows a coat like a bear (and could do with losing a bit of weight too!)
I am always astonished at the amount of unclipped native/cobby type horses and ponies that you see wearing mw rugs at this time of year!
My WB is in his mediumweight at night - its getting very cold with us at nights (sheltered scottish Glen), but naked through the day until he is clipped in a couple weeks.
My old pony is also Medium weight at night - she feels the cold now. Also she has nothing on through the day. She is very hairy now though.
ETA They are still outside 24/7!
Mine are naked till it gets a lot colder and Bear's clipped, even then he only wears a basic M/W. They have a shelter this winter too! So thats a luxury!
I try and wait until the 1st of November to rug! God knows why but thats what we have always done.
I never understand these posts, they are totally pointless as far as I can see.
Every horse is different, the shelter in each field is different, the microclimate round each yard is different.
My horse is a TB - not rugged at the moment, everything around him is. Does not mean those people are wrong and I am right or vice versa, it means I own a hot horse in a sheltered paddock who got too hot when I put his lightweight no fill rug on one or two days last week, and who is perfectly warm and happy fluffing his coat up for now. Doesn't mean if I owned another horse I'd do the same with that one.
I don't own any rug heavier than a medium weight for him - even fully clipped in the depths of winter that is enough for him.
As far as I can see, it matters not a jot what everyone else is doing and only that your horse is happy, comfortable and not too hot/cold - better to learn how your horse is happy, when it is uncomfortable (be that too hot or too cold) and deal with it accordingly than to think 'everything else has a rug on/off, I must do the same' - which is an utterly bizarre way to run your life if you ask me!
at the mo merin is wearing a lightweight stable rug with a waterproof no-fill rug on top if he is out in field.
but he has hardly any winter coat and i rug by him - he has been wearing a cooler in his stable at night and naked in field (not clipped) and was cold the other morning, so have now put lightweight stable rug on. he is much more happy now
totally agree spotted cat. i would love not to have to bother rugging but my thin skinned, fine coated t/b is absolutely miserable when she gets wet, the other one is an older boy and is starting to feel the cold, he also had cancer so i want to keep him comfortable. there are others at my yard who are naked or have different weights of rugs to me. i do my own thing, because i know my horses.
My mare had a full clip yesterday so is in a MW day and night. She was wearing a lightweight if it was raining and a fleece at night.
My youngster is currently in a ligtweight during the day as the weather is horrible and he has no coat and a fleece at night. Now that its getting below 10 degrees he will have a very light quilt on at night. Im trying to get him to grow a fluffy coat but he still has a very fine coat and is feeling the cold. I cant afford for him to lose weight either.
