Am i right or wrong?? Showing Related

Martingales are allowd in the jumping stages of a working hunter class, but thats about it really.
Although you will find at low key novice shows they allow it, and it will depend on a judge. I was asked to canter a lead rein pony yesterday at an unaffilated show, luckily my daughter and pony jumped at the chance to do at bit more.
But certainly at high level affiliated shows you wouldnt be able to and would be marked down on it.

No except maybe the raised noseband.

But it's anything like one of our local show - let's just say that they have Haflingers as a M&M breed:confused:- so obviously anything goes ;)

Technically yes but you wouldn't want to as you will be placed behind horses who are turned out correctly. Martingales are fairly usual in working hunter classes.

martingales - yes in working hunter and any class involving jumping
dutch gags - no
flashes - yes in working hunter
coloured numnahs - red, pink etc - no
jumping whip - probably yes in working hunter
raised noseband - depends on class but yes

If you're talking specifically about flat showing classes then only flashes and probably raised noseband are allowed but don't quote me on that!

Ok thanks, Did best turned out today at a local show , judge 15mins late as class started at 10:00am she there at 10:15 and there were 20 odd in the class then class split in to lead rein and non-lead rein. So while we were waiting one women had a dutch gag and martingale on her horse and one girl had a flash on her pony both were placed 4th and 5th!! Then i wasn't placed . I know it is the judges decision but over the years of doing best turned out we have been told how to improve and have always listened. When i asked the judge where i gone wrong she said "i can't remember as there a few of you"!! We were in bto class for over an hour  all horses and ponies were soon getting fed up by the end can't blame them for standing there for nearly an hour !! Bless them all.

My friend did Family Pony with her boy and on the programme said all horse and ponies must wear a snaffle for this class! (Nice and clear) my friend went in a came out not placed :( two people who had been placed had been wearing pelhams!!

Oh Well sorry for rant the last two times i have been showing at this show have had problems!! Sorry for rant just really annoys me when judges don't stick to rules as if you went to HOYS and Olympia no one would break or change rules there!!

I understand Martingale and Whip for Working Hunter but this wasn't working hunter. Wish i did working hunter with my boy now. x

If you want to do competitions that are run professionally then do something better than crappy best turned out at your local show!

I see what you are saying but i'm not into showing professionally and only do best turned out for fun really and then do showjumping which me and my boy love :D but it's just so annoying when judges break rules  x

And its not just best turned out it is also other classes!! Im gonna stick to doing what my boy does best showjumping and XC :) x

I'd like to think rules are rules at any show indepedant of what levels they are!
We don't show any higher than a few qualifiers (and it still happens there; we noticed things that shouldn't have been allowed at the HOYS qualifiers!)
Even so, when you've worked hard with your horse even for a local show (shock, horror :p) you would rather be placed with your Sect D (for arguments sakes) ahead of a show pony in an M&M class!
And even more so when the winner coincidentally goes home with the judge at the end of the day!!

Yeah same i don't see how the judge has the right to change the rules, obviously didn't read schedule!!
Completely agree with you!!
Well i said to my mum if i have another bad day showing there i aint showing there again just sj and maybe working hunter. x

As far as I know there aren't any tack rules for best turned out - it is simply a matter of how clean and tidy you are your horse are. Also, welcome to the world of showing - it is up to the judge what he/she prefers and there is little argument with that.

I agree with the point about the pelhams in family pony - that is not on.

As has already been said, if you want proper judges, go to proper shows!

Mmmmm yeah well im not showing there again anyway!! Thanks x

Agree with whats been said about Marden show. Iv been once before and wouldn't bother again. Lea show is much more profesional! It defo depends on which show you go to as to what the rules are but some of the time at shows round here the people who win oftern know the judge.... its even happened in SJ classes!! :O

There most certainly ARE tack rules for turnout classes, I answered this on the other thread to have copied it here.

urnout should be:

If a native or unplaited horse:

A saddle that fits, preferably leather but I would prefer a clean well fitted synthetic to a dirty ill fitting leather one.
Pelham with TWO reins or either a double or a snaffle
NO coloured browbands
No numnah or if one has to be used make sure it is discreet and either black or brown
Tack should preferably be brown but black is acceptable at local level
Girths should be leather or if webbing it should match the horse as closely as possible - bay or chestnut - brown, greys - white and blacks - black.

The rider:

Tweed jacket
Velvet hat to suit jacket
Tan or brown gloves (not navy or black no matter what colour your jacket is!)
Showing cane
Cream or canary jods
Adults - long boots (can be brown or black) and spurs or dummy spurs
Juniors can wear jod boots (with joddie clips!)
Shirt and tie.
NO button hole

Plaited horse:

As above but, depending on the type, a coloured browband is correct

Rider:

Again as above but blue jacket and a button hole (to match browband if worn)

Needless to say, everything (including your stirrup irons) should be cleaned to within an inch of it's life and, if your tack is new, make sure it is well oiled! Oh and dont forget to clean the soles of your boots!
