Am i the only person in the world who doesn't like coloured horses????

it can also be my choice not to agree! and excuse me before this started to become more "heated" shall we say you apolagised and some had already taken offence!!

I am far from determined to have an agruement as I have only ever owned one coloured who is three weeks old.. and our mostly cob horse is my husbands...??

So you are saying you have to like the look of the horse or sex of it to have a good relationship with it??? to want to own it??? care for it?? love it??? so what does current owner think of that??? That preferences visably take over everything else??

You see I can not help but be puzzled by that... and this is a discussion forum, so i am allowed my view, as others have stated they are allowed theirs??

No your not alone...... I've never really liked coloureds..... however there have been a few that have caught my eye in the past year or so, that I would not turn down if for sale......

Everyone is different..... Coloureds are becomming more and more like a breed now, I dont like arabs, some people dont like TB's, I happen to love them, some people hate big flashy warmbloods, some people like shetlands.... We are all different in the things we like and dislike......

It is not a reflection on breeders at all...... At the end of the day..... there are many breeds, and many different temperaments to choose from..... and looking at it from a different angle, if the horse was a bloke would you want to marry it? I'd marry all my horses if they were men.....!!!! LOL!
 
I don't really give a monkey's uncle what colour a horse is, I tend to judge a horse on it's ability, conformation and attitude rather than it's colour. I've had a dappled grey, dark bay and a chestnut and all were beautiful in their ways. I also love seeing unusual horses such a appy's and piebalds in the competition ring. I saw a beautiful cremello competing at Harold's park on sunday, really nice to see unusual colours.

I personally have a soft spot for orange horses and all things being equal I would choose orange over bay BUT colour would never impact on my decision to buy a horse.
 
I have to admit Im not a fan of coloureds of the gypsy cob variety, but thats all the feathers, mane etc too, not my cup of tea.

Im the same with 'normal' bays though.

However a finer coloured, WB type, well marked, can be stunning, so Im not totally against them, its more coloured cobs that dont tickle my fancy.

I LOVE black horses and any unusual colour, my last horse was a gorgeous golden dun, I have a bay at present, but he is a very bright one, howeer he is such a star I wouldnt care if he was pink!
 
Yes I have to like the look of a horse to want to own it, and no I do not want to own a mare..... does that make me such a bad person that I should not own a horse at all???? I dont think so. I also dont think I am on my own in this matter, especially judging by the majority of the posts..... I did infact expect to be shot down by coloured fans and was surprised by the response. I also at no time have mentioned the word cob.... would be silly to have done so as my horse is welsh cob cross!!!!!

If I was choosing a human partner I think that the looks and the gender might just be part of the process of choice, so why different for an equine partner???? I would not choose an ugly female to be my partner just because she was able to do a good job (and not saying that coloured horses are ugly by the way) . I would choose the male whom 'I' find attractive because that is what I want in a relationship.

I dont hate you in any way, but will choose to ignore your posts from now on as I find the poor spelling irritating and the bad grammar makes the posts very difficult to understand properly.... thanks for your input!

I'm with Merlinsquest here; think that sex and colour can be important factors when you are buying a horse and in no way does that mean you shouldn't own a horse!

When I was looking for a horse last year I purposely only looked at geldings and if possible looked for a coloured horse or dark bay ... I like the look of them and after all you spend a heck of a lot of money and time looking after a horse so why not get one that you think is nice looking, as long as it is sound, has a nice temperament & can do the job you want it to do?

In the end I looked at several greys & bright bays but did end up with a dark bay ...

Whoa! This thread is getting a bit heated! C'mon - there's no need to get personal or be rude!

Interesting to note the difference between this thread and the 'Why do you hate Arabs?' thread... I think we Arab-owners are so used to our horses being bad-mouthed and rubbished and generally vilified that we no longer get too worked up about it!

People are allowed their personal preferences, surely? And must be allowed to express their preferences.

What worries me a bit about the current fashion for coloured horses is that some people do seem to be 'blinded' by dazzling markings and fail to see conformation faults and weaknesses. The result is that some very inferior horses are fetching high prices just because they are coloured.

Somebody adept with photoshop should run a special service on the 'horses for sale' websites, colouring in piebald horses plain bay for naive novice buyers, so they can see if they are really buying the horse for the right reasons!

And some people are breeding for colour without much regard for conformation or athletic ability. Breeding for any one single characteristic is a recipe for disaster.

(This applies equally to, say, Arab people breeding for pretty heads at the expense of good conformation, so I'm not just singling out coloured breeders here.)

Perhaps I will change my sig as merlin obvioulsy has such bad conformation, wierd but I can only see his neck, thought topline was more than that and no he doesnt usually use his back correctly when cotemplating how to roll in 3 feet of water!!!!!!!!!!!

Spot on, there is no doubt there are coloured stallions standing because they are coloured. The fashion for a coloured horse has meant quality etc has gone out the window. I actually like a good coloured horse, with a good strong pattern. I avoid greys, simply because they are such hard work to keep clean! No other reason, I have known some cracking grey horses. It is such a shame that this turned almost personal in the remarks being made. When I was a child, coloured horses were frowned on, mainly thought of as Gypsy horses. Chestnut mares were always thought of as hot like red heads. And the poor Arab was always slated with stupid comments like "they dont like water!". I think it was just an excuse for bad riding, my horse does not do that because he is an Arab! Lets just enjoy our horses & appreciate what they give to us, for some this is often cut short.

Personally, I wouldn't turn down a coloured horse if it was the right one for me, although if there was lots of white I would be worried about keeping it clean because I'm a lazy groom! But then I feel the same about greys but still bought one for my daughter because it was otherwise the right pony at the right price. But I wouldn't pay extra for a horse just because of its colour.

Just wanted to add that I can see why people might be prepared to pay a bit extra for a coloured if they want to show, as there are so many coloured classes for all different categories of horse/pony.

I bought both of them because of the feel they gave me when I tried them. My coloured boy makes me smile everytime I ride him & i would have bought him had he been bay or any other colour. However I do like coloureds, but my caveat would alway be...... Would you still buy this horse if it was bay. If the answer is yes then it's the right horse for you.
Horses like people are individuals & what one person like someone else will hate.
(I add that I've owned 2 bays, 2 chestnuts & one piebald. My best horse was a bay mare but I'm hoping my piebald boy will be as good as she was

Obv i love coloured but always look for a good horse whether it has colour or not
they arent for eveyone, but that could be said for any colour- preference and suitabilty are paramount
(hides in a corner-- but coloureds are best!! hahaha)
 
Ahhh, now I like a horse that's a bit different.

I like silver duns best out of all the dun colours, I like a good roan and I like a well marked pie or skewbald.

As they say a good horse has no colour. I seem to have a lot of duns ATM. about 8 I think.

I'm of the same opinion as you and I find them basically unappealing (but then I don't like greys much either and love chestnuts - show's we are all different) and very overpriced
 
I currently own a coloured cob, I had been hacking her for her owner for a while to tide me over while I was looking for a new horse.
I never even considered buying her because she wasnt what I was looking for or even anywhere near what I wanted.. but after much searching there was nothing I liked enough to buy. It was only until her owner said that he was selling her that it really hit me.. and I snapped her up that day!

I really couldnt ask for a better horse who is as willing as her, yes she can be an opinionated cow at times but it wouldnt be her if she was a boring "ploddy" cob which they are often stereotyped to be.. Which does annoy me!

I get looked down on at shows by the poncy warmblood owners because shes a "hairy cow" but they soon shut up when she wins the class.

I dont think horses should be ruled out by there colour, size or shape. But each to there own.. Im proud to own a big fat hairy cob!!
 
What an odd post! I buy a horse on their merits/potential and what I wanted to do with them - if the colour had anything to do with that then so be it (for example alot of judges don't place coloureds in working hunter from the shows i've been to).

I think there are alot of bloody ugly coloureds and alot of gorgeous ones (girl up my yard has a stunning skewbald WB).

I also love Cremellos though after having one - such headturning horses!

I have nothing against hairy coloured cobs, but I would never buy one. I know they're not all plods, but I like fairly fine sharp tb/tbx types - so I obviously would rule out something big and hairy.

A lot of people don't like tb or arab types, and I love them but I don't get offended if other people don't.

I also don't see why some people are getting all worked up about this thread - nobody is saying they hate coloureds or that they can't do a job, its just a thread about preferences! There is no need to take offence.

Could't agree more. My mums got a hairy coloured cob - for me, riding him was a nightmare but my mum loves him. She thinks I'm stupid keeping Ty so it's horses for courses - pardon the pun!

I have to agree with the costs of coloured - particularly the hairy types - they have gone through the roof, mainly due to the demand from the US.

I own - what to me is the most beautiful gypsy cob with lots of hair - I purposely bought this type - I love the breed for its character, temperment and good all round abilities - if I was still into fast and furious I would have stuck with the TBs and WBs that I used to have and colour was not something I would have considered.

I went to see my ideal well bred gypsy piebald mare (with 50 - 50 colouring and black tail) but fell in love with an equally well bred skewbald colt, who is a 50 - 50 bay coloured with a black tail - bonus!

However, there is a lot of junk out there going for thousands - when they used to be meat money - purely because they are coloured - same horse in a solid colour is far less.

I understand why people don't like them or love them - each to their own. If we all rode the same colour and type of horse the world would be a very boring place.
 
I think it's great that they have acquired such value, used to have so many around the meat markets, pretty valueless and completely underestimated. Traditional coloured cob types are wonderful all rounders, and should be the horse of choice for so many Rc level people who instead go buy a sports horse with unfortunate consequences.

I used to love coloureds when I had one but now I wouldn't to be honest. I really like dark bays with black points.
I would never have a cremello, appalossa, fleabitten grey or palamino- sorry!
 
Exactly. I love Bay horses yet am not offended by the number of people saying they 'hate' them or think they're boring. I know that when I am finally in a position to buy a horse bay will be at the top of my list but I wouldn't buy any horse just for the colour.
 
whoa this post did get a bit heated didn't it! i think panther may owe someone a bit of an apology i don't think the moderator can take any more personal attacks on people.

Personally a coloured would not be my first choice, after owning a grey for 12 years i want a solid colour that won't show up dirt as much, but saying that if the right horse came along and it was coloured i would get it. - prefer one thats more bay/black than white. I definately do not like the chestnut and white ones though, perhaps something to do with losing on in a herd of herefords once and getting a headache trying to spot it LOL

Owners of coloured horses do not get offended, its just my personal preferance and i don't hate coloured horses just don't particularly like them. i own two arabs so i'm used to horsey predjudice
