I went down today and my boy was the only naked horse (well, 1 other was but he is coming in at night). I am determined not to bring in til 31st. Should I be rugging? He is chunky and hairy and I am trying to be tough but....

I'm not rugging. Had 2 spells of torrential rain 2 weeks ago, and he had his rug on for them (lives out 24/7, so has no chance to get away from it and dry off) but has been off ever since. I will keep it off (except for cases of heavy rain) until it starts to get properly cold.

I rugged today (LW turnout) for the first time and regretted it. Forecast was wet and windy and its been lovely. All the other horses on the yard are rugged.

I have only rugged because I trace clipped him, he only has a short neck rain sheet and anti rub vest on as it aint that cold yet, I dont like overheating him.

Murph would normally be at least trace clipped and rugged by now and in at night. This year he probably won't do much work and we have a new field shelter so am hoping he will be out for a fair bit of the winter, so at the moment he is very woolly and unrugged

2 of our 3 are out 24/7 - a yearling and a very hairy 26yo mare. Am trying to keep them unrugged as long as possible but they have excellent natural shelter and we live in the mild southeast. If it gets really really wet then I will give in but until it goes out of double figures in the day I will try to keep them naked.
On the other hand the woosey TB is in a medium weight in the field in the day and in a medium stable rug whilst in at night.

No.

Averaging -5C during the night and mine are still happy naked and about a third as yak-like as they get.

I am one of the few people who blanket over winter, at all, in my area and -5C during the DAY is considered warm, if it isn't windy on days like that, the blankets come off mine for a few hours.

I will keep my mares off unless its raining then only LW, trying to hang on as long as poss so she gets fluffier.
Would you fancy being stuck in your waterproof coat for weeks on end

I am not rugging mine unless - like tomorrow - it's going to rain all day. Then I will put a rain sheet on because he would take ages to dry.
Once he's clipped, though, I will rug him.

If he's chunky and hairy no rug I'd advice. I have a rug on my tb x but she's had a clip (trace) and still out 24/7, my weanlings are out 24/7 no rugs.

Snap! I have a similar collection to Mrs M -DW, NF, Welshie, cobs, plus a shettie and a TBx.

None rugged yet, they have a sheltered field and are not clipped either. I tend to do only light clips then turn out on mild days with no rug still, as several of mine hate having rugs on and I love seeing them rolling about naked

Native cob x, not rugged yet. Has the most wonderful winter coat which I like to see in all its glory for a few weeks yet. He normally gets an Irish or bib type clip at end Oct/early Nov and after that once weather gets wet and the field gets muddy and he rolls endlessly then I will start to put a lightweight on just so that I can ride in the school in the evenings without having to spend hours attempting to get off mud. He'll be stabled overnight and as where we are gets very cold wind coming off the field blowing into the stables and has it's own mini Arctic microclimate so he'll also have a stable rug once it gets below 2-3 degrees at night.

Gosh I am feeling so much better! The OH offered to drive me to the yard tonight to rug him if I felt bad (having filled me with Baileys which the OH went to buy for me today and is serving me at the sofa whilst cooking my dinner). I cant complain! Thanks everyone!

my boy is is his medium weight over night and light weight during the day but he is clipped there are people at my yard who have clipped more than me my boys only chaser clipped and they still have no rugs on

my wee sisters pony is the same but not clipped she's just old

I haven't used any rugs yet on my TBx mare, but I'm the only person on my yard who hasn't. Everyone else is rugging - even the cobs and hairy ponies.

I keep telling myself, 'the day I come up and find she feels cold, she'll have a rug put on - not before' as she hates being too warm. I was slightly surprised to find her feeling toasty warm even at 6am the other morning when it was only 5 degrees.

My hairies live out all year with no rugs even when clipped. (Low trace).
They only have their rugs on if its prolonged rain and cold wind.
Rainy and warm, dry, or snow and they stay naked.

Winter is far too long to spend rugged up solidly IMO.

My 2yr old Cob is not in work, not clipped and not rugged, i think he can keep himself warm.
My other pony who is in work was getting quite sweaty so has been clipped and is now in a lightweight at night and rain sheet during the day.
Both are out 24/7.

I'm not rugging and I won't be either. They aren't clipped, are getting nicely hairy and I believe they are waterproof. They can stand behind a hedge during the day and are in at night - no stable rugs either. We have had a hard frost two mornings running now, but temperatures around sixteen to eighteen degrees during the day, so au naturel they will stay.

My TB mare started coming in at night last weekend. She is rugged in a MW during the day.

My NF gelding lives out 24/7 and only gets rugged if it snows!

I haven't been rugging - but will tomorrow as the weather is about to turn wet. Just a lightweight to keep the worst of the weather off.
