Here are some photos that were taken today. The horse is 16hh Hannoverian X mare whose been out of work for around 6 weeks.

So what do you think?
(Please ignore my riding, I haven't ridden properly for almost a year)

Of course not! I think the fact your stirrups are hiked up so short and you are in a chair seat position is adding to the illusion that you look massive on her :)

Not at all, as others have said, maybe let your stirrups down a few holes.

I'm 5'10" (and a bit) and my old mare was a 16hh TB, and the current (now retired) is only just 15.1hh - and i looked fine on both - really you have nothing to worry about with your height on a 16hh horse! (I also regularly rode a 14hh connemara pony on endurance rides, and even on him i looked fine!)

I think you look lovely on her - and would look even better with your stirrups a little longer! She looks like a really nice horse, are you thinking of buying her?

Thank-you.. Yes I am thinking of buying her as she is everything I am looking for, but, as I've been used to riding bigger and chunkier horses I wasn't sure whether I looked OK on her.

I left the stirrups on the length of the owner, and should have definitely put them down!

Just realised two photos are the same! Duh!! This is the other photo I meant to put up:

odd question - you are nowhere near too big for this horse. Take a look at some of the chunky riders at shows squishing their poor overweight natives ......

I wouldn't say you are too big, just the stirrups not being at your ideal length makes you look perched on her.

Longer stirrups would make the whole picture look better.

Good luck with her if you decide to have her :)

Another who thinks if you drop your stirrups you will look much better as you do look kinda scrunched up a bit but other than that you are a fine height

Thats got to be the smallest 16hh if you are 5'8''!! ;-)
I am 5'11'' and this is me on a very very light build 15.1hh (recently out of racing) -

I think in your case also if you let your stirrups down to a "normal" length rather than trying to hitch them up to look smaller you will look much more in proportion and balanced and the picture will look much better!

That is one seriously beautiful horse - if you like her and she's a reasonable price put down a deposit and sort the vet before someone else does. ;)

Posts like this are the reason I don't post ridden pics of mine. If someone honestly thinks they could be too big for a 16.1hh at 5'8" I dread to think what they would say about my poor abused horse. She wasn't quite 15.3hh when we bought her, a lightweight and she is ridden by me (5'8") and DH (6'2"). Clearly we both need rollerskates!

OP - perhaps you need to get a bigger horse as if you have doubts, you may not ever feel comfortable and as if you've compromised on your purchase;)

I'm 5' 2" but wouldn't buy less than 16.1 hh as that is what I feel most comfortable with:)

I'm the opposite of Achinghips. Downgraded from 16.3 fairly wide WB to 15.2 mid width wB - best thing I did. He feels tiny but no aching hips! But I am 5ft3in.

You look a little tall on her but certainly not 'too big'. The ridiculously short stirrups don't help!

And echo the others RE her height : she doesn't look anywhere near 16hh!
