Amused by a new 'cool mix'

My sisters horse loves banana so much that he stopped whilst out on a hack in a he roads, reversed and picked up a minging banana peel on the road that must have been run over a good few times. Grim. All ours eat them, skin and all. Not the point of this thread though, sorry!

Interesting thread OP. You have prompted me to look more closely at my boys Low Energy mix. Always though low energy and mix are 3 words that shouldn't go together, anyway not much on their website about what's actually in it. I found more by googling. Think it's safe to say it is not what I would call 'low energy'. Now thinking of cutting it out all together.
These feed companies are a bit of a joke. We've had a woman at the yard doing scientific research into joint supplements and what she has come out with is pretty depressing too.

lol don't get me started on most joint supps ;)
Someone was waffling on about one the other day having a special carrier to help it be absorbed but never came back to me with what/references/evidence, funny that :D

I do think for most if they only require a 'low energy mix' all they really need is a decent vit/min supplement and something to put it in.

tbh I dont think natives even need that if on varied grazing. mine are getting nothing this winter save some soaked cobs if we get a prolonged cold/snowy snap to help keep them hydrated-and a bit of hay. They are on unimproved pasture and their feet are brilliant right now on nothing other than that and a salt lick.

Eep, I've just been reading the ingredients of the pasture mix that I used to feed before I came on here, and learned better :o.

Wheatfeed, Nutritionally Improved Straw, Barley, Cane Molasses, Wheat, Maize, Limestone Flour, Peas, Oatfeed, Vegetable Oil, Salt, Extracted Sunflower, Mint (0.8%), Vitamin/Trace Mineral Premix, Garlic Granules (0.5%), Dried Carrots (0.5%), Calcined Magnesite, L-Lysine

At least I only fed a token amount, rather than the 3kg per day recommended...

I didn't know horses liked bananas until one day when my friend chucked her banana skin on the ground and my then 2 year old picked it up and ate it!

after that i tried them all on bananas and they all liked them!

loads of commercial feeds are unsuitable for horses imho, never mind ones who are extra sensitive like metabolic or ulcer prone...full of fillers, sugar and rubbish.
feed as simple as possible imho

Totally agree. Never ceases to amaze me how many people don't read the ingredients and feed their animals utter sh1 te.

True, at home we have old unimproved pasture, it's belonged to the family for a long time and not been fertilised while I've been alive but it's in a lush growing area and not very varied/they end up with limited roaming abilities as it gets so lush!
