This may look rigid if one is used to watching modern dressage. This horse is in a much higher state of collection than we ever see now, even in the Olympics. Note that M. Oliveira rode this entire segment with the reins in one hand, and the horse always had the correct flexion of his neck with the poll being the highest point. Modern dressage horses almost always have their 2nd and 3rd vertebrae as the highest point, which will not produce true collection, but have the horse on the forehand.
