This may look rigid if one is used to watching modern dressage. This horse is in a much higher state of collection than we ever see now, even in the Olympics. Note that M. Oliveira rode this entire segment with the reins in one hand, and the horse always had the correct flexion of his neck with the poll being the highest point. Modern dressage horses almost always have their 2nd and 3rd vertebrae as the highest point, which will not produce true collection, but have the horse on the forehand.

He really uses those walls to his advantage. Perhaps we should all start schooling in the bathroom and forget massive arenas? Just beautiful!

Lots for me to enjoy. The gentle pat and stroking of the horse when he first gets on. The use of his back in half halts, like a clutch in the car. The softness of the spur and aids, the stillness of the hands. How he is always waiting for the right moment to give the aids. I find it mesmerising.

Lovely video and great use of space! I couldn't help but notice he's riding a completely different type of horse to what you usually see doing high level dressage these days, it looks like a compact little baroquey type horse.

HI Pheme, think it is probably an Alter Real the royal breed of Portugal and yes, as you say a baroque horse. :)
