This morning, Grace and I went over to Halifax to have her suspensory ligament rescanned. After everything she has been through since the previous scan and the way she has been acting since coming home from colic surgery, I was convinced there would be no improvement
Anyway, they sedated her to clip the back of her suspensory, and then Peter Scholefield scanned both legs to compare the two. I don't think I breathed at all while he did this. The lights were turned on, and he started going through it with me...
Grace's left suspensory is still slightly thicker than the right one, and there is still a slight bow in it. But, there is a big improvement from last time and the two ligaments are very similar now whereas before there was a big difference in the one that had not been injured and the left hind one. He is very pleased with the progress of the healing, and said in normal circumstances he would not instruct me to start her ridden work.
Peter told me he wanted her in-hand walking time increased now, and then had a look at her colic surgery scar and asked me when the box rest period finishes... I told him we had another 2 weeks to go before she can be turned out in a 50ft field. I told him that I was not planning on turning her out with how wet it is at the moment, but had spoken to the vet at Leahurst and I could continue as I was doing.
Peter re-examined the scar and said it was solid now under there and rather than turning her out in two weeks time, he wanted me to start riding her in two weeks time!!! Initially he wants her ridden in walk for 30 minutes, and slowly increased to an hour over four weeks. So on 17th February I can ride my gorgeous girl
This will be 9 weeks after colic surgery, but he assured me the scar and the healing process has done fantastically well and he said the muscles underneath were solid underneath and not to worry!
